This is a big deciding factor for me. Can human players team on the same side against all ai? My wife doesn't like to compete with me and if this is an option then you will have two sales here 
Yep, you can do that. 
You'd have to do Custom multiplayer or LAN games for this, since Skirmish/Pantheon are auto-matchmaking modes which don't allow you to set up the teams.
Sure you can. Just when making a game, select AI for the opposite team and have wife join your team.
Yeah, as others said it is possible. You can also select the difficulty of each AI individually, so if you and your wife are of differing skill levels, you can each pick a rival CPU to fight of the appropriate difficulty.
My friends and I played against the AI quite a bit. No problems doing that.
