Hard To Believe

Hi. I cannot believe all the problems that I am having with Windowblinds 6.3, meaning the enhanced version.

First, I tried the trial public version, and everything worked just great. So I paid for the enhanced version, thinking that everything will be just fine. NO! First, I uninstalled the public, free version. The first 2 times I tried to install it, the installation hung up at about 96 percent complete, on some stupid leo/xpstuff file or something. Finally, I managed to install this thing, but it would not let me apply any skins, but kept taking me into the windows classic skin. So I uninstalled it, and then reinstalled it. I even tried to delete the stardock, windowblinds part of my name/user/stardock/windowblinds folder in the users folder, then when I tried to install a skin and apply it, windowblinds would freeze up.  I uninstalled it and reinstalled it yet again, but now it tells me it needs to reboot, because of spyware defender programs, supposedly. So I disasbled windows defender, and norton 360's firewall and spyware stuff, windowblinds still wants a reboot after all the work that I have done..............I have NEVER NEVER NEVER had so much problems with this program before. Can someone help me? I am really upset and frustrated. Instead of having a free public trial and then a paid enhanced version, Stardock could have made things a lot easier, by just using one program. All I should have had to do was enter a special code to activate a program that was ALREADY working correctly. This was nuts!

Try the uninstall/install process with Impulse.

Uninstall Windowblinds > run ccleaner to remove any leftovers > REBOOT

try this......open up Windows Defender > choose Tools > choose Options > scroll all the way to the bottom and uncheck "Use Windows Defender"

Then open Firewall and choose turn off firewall..............disable any anti-virus you have running.......

now nothing should stop Impulse from installing software from the internet.........

Install Windowblinds > REBOOT > run windowblinds

hopefully all will be well.

edit: don't forget to turn all your security programs back on afterward.

Why do I have to use IMPULSE? That shouldn't be necessary. And on top of that, I already stated that I had disabled windows defender, and windows firewall. I also had already stated that I had disabled norton 360's firewall, spyware and antivirus...... I am beginning to think that this is a hopeless cause............

Johann, do you want it done correctly so that you'll be able to run the software w/o problems? Seems to me you've gone to a lot of trouble to "get it right" so, use Impulse.  ;)

You can uninstall Impulse after you install Windowblinds............Stardock puts out A LOT of software and Impulse is THE installer. Alternately you can start a support ticket..........https://esupport.stardock.com/

Impulse is THE installer
End of quote

As opposed to having an installer for each of the MANY programs. Don't dis impulse; it is a great tool. And, like Lantec said, if you don't want it on your machine, you can uninstall it when you're done.

Take it from me. When I got a new machine, I had to go through the rigamaroll a little bit. Impulse really helped streamline things.

Impulse may be THE installer, but I will not pay for this program a second time by credit card. I already paid for this program by MAIL and a MONEY ORDER, and I do not have a credit card to use, so I cannot use IMPULSE. Any other bright ideas?

I don't understand why you think you would have to purchase anything again.

Your best bet is to start with a full build of Impulse. - Impulse Client - Full

Register it with teh email address or account you used when you purchased.  WB will show up on the My Descktop tab.  Install it.

Wait, the first screen for windowblinds was a purchase screen, I skipped that, and found a different one that allows a download. While impulse was doing its work, I worried, is this going to be the public free version again?????? but then it activated.............go figure.....not sure if I am right that I am ok.........but now it's asking for a reboot, and I do not understand. I have already disabled windows firewall and defender. And I have already disabled norton 360's anti virus, anti spyware and firewall.............WHY AM I BEING ASKED TO REBOOT? This is ridiculous!!

3java3,

What you are describing is atypical.  And it's rather hard to follow what you did.

Uninstall any Stardock apps you have.

Reboot.

Run ccleaner (to clean your registry)

Reboot

Install Impulse

Enter your registration data

Disable ALL desecurity apps.  (and remember that some systems hide them away)

Go to My Desktop tab

Install Windowblinds

Reboot.

Following provided instructions is a good thing, not following instruction is bad and could cause the program not to work properly.

Many of the programs I have installed, and not just Stardock programs, require a reboot. I dare say that at least half the programs I run required a reboot.

Reboots are not bad. I think you are jumping to conclusions. Follow Zubaz's instructions, and you should be good.

Noticed you have an Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family, if you look at the report you posted, it doesn't report any memory, or even give the driver date. You should look into this as many of these chipsets don't have the power, or WB could be placing to many demands of a weak video system.

Rebooting once after install/uninstall is normal, continued reboots are not. Have you e-mailed us at support@stardock.com?

Actually, with additional tinkering, I now have everything working the way that I wanted to. Windowblinds is NOW WORKING PROPERLY. FINALLY. I am not using the Royale theme, (xp media center pc theme). And now it's time to change the subject. Now, I have another issue that I would like to deal with. Simple. If you have to choose, would you use rocket dock or object bar to simulate the dock on the mac os 10.4 or 10.5? Thanks for all your suggestions, corrections, rebukes, patience, LOL.

Just out of curosity, what tinkering did you do to get things working?

Since you have a new question, I would start another thread.

People reading this thread title are not going to know your original question is taken care of or that you are seeking answers to a a new question.

In regards to your second question a screenshot of what you want it to look like would be helpful.  I've not used Rocket Dock, Object Bar is just that a bar, you might have a better chance of simulating what you want using Object Dock or Object dock Plus.

I disabled UAC in windows vista, then I deleted that leftover folder from the public free version that was in program files, that did not go away when I uninstalled the previous windowblinds. Then the folder I could not delete before, I trashed it. Then I used cc cleaner to clean things up. When I got the reboot screen, I rebooted, fearing that after that, I would keep getting a reboot balloon, like before, but no....now windowblinds is working just dandy, and I am so relieved. Of course, I reactivated my firewall, antivirus, antispyware stuff, as well as the UAC.
