Does population affect research?

From what I've read it sounds like population affects income, but has no affect on production. Does anyone know if population has any affect on research?

It doesn't.  Just income (both from taxation and from tourism via influence) and UP votes (via influence).

Thanks Sole Soul. After reading some of the comments on this forum, and looking at your response to my question, I believe I was building to many farms on most of my planets.

You should only build one farm on each planet which when fully upgraded in ToA will cap your population at 15B (8B for the initial colony + 7B for the best farm) and 16B on your home world (multiple once you start invading the other races).
