Sore Losers who refuse to quit even when the game is long-since over

Does anyone else get annoyed by people who refuse to quit the game even after it's been decisively decided?  I've found people who will stick around out of spite in the hopes of getting a minidump or just to force the victors to finish off every planet.  In the most recent game, a rather repugnant guy named -=Newt=- went psycho when we suggested that he quit.  Some of us were waiting to start up a skilled game with friends but this guy insisted on making us finish off every planet to get the W.  (Game started around 6 pm EST on Saturday.)

Is it time to have some sort of an option where the victors can declare victory even before all of the planets have been conquered?

You shouldn't be allowed to declare your own victory but there should be preset victory conditions. Like own a certian % of the planets,

It's an amusing complaint as most of the time in RTS games, the opposite is what is irritating.  When you've worked hard to conquer the enemy and he drops immediately before you get to relish squashing his troops and buildings.  That being said, andreplav probably has it right.

I resent that comparison!

Ok, maybe it's my fault.

If the guy winning wants it over, I resign.  If he doesn't, I stick it out to it's mind numbingly boring end.  This thread however is um... petty?

Well, there should be some sort of formula where at a certain point--certain % of planets owned or say 80% of all the fleet supply in the galaxy the winning team can opt to end it.  Of course the guys on the losing team can opt to quit at any time and get docked a "Game played".

Why didn't you guys just quit? Are the rankings that big of a deal?

ok so if u worked for a win on your record wouldnt u want it its not that its a big deal its that it is so often

If you want to play a game then play one dont just expect people to quit because you want end it, and what you are proposing is the most ridiculus idea i have ever heard of. If you wanted the game to be over sooner than you actually winning then you should quit. In no way would I expent the other person to quit because I wanted them to.

im not saying u should be able to declare victory im just saying its annoying when people dont quit even though they lost i have had to wait half an hour for my friends to get out of a game

Reminds me of that Starcraft ladder match my brother played. He got raped, but got his engineering bay and a lone wraith out of harms way. So Captain Mike as he quickly became known managed to perform misleading hit and run tactics for over an hour, protecting the super secret hiding place of the EngiBay. It was fun flying in the blindspots of the enemy's patrol-grid.

ok now if i was waltching that would be funny but if i was that guy i would be pissed off.

but in sins its difrent its not like u r doing anything but bombing planets there are no hit and runs because u have no fleet its just boring

To bad you don't have the option of setting up preset victory conditions.

But in a game where its down to the last man standing you can't declare yourself victor untill one of two conditions is met.

1. Wipe him off the map.

2. Have him foreit.

I actualy would applaud Newt for sticking it out to the bitter end.

Don't like it? Well don't play him again.

If you were bored, then just quit.  If you want to "work for a win" then I suggest you work for a win by destroying all enemy plannets.

When I used to play online, I would always fight right till the very, very end (except once or twice when I was having very bad days). I was actually able to turn around about half of them and win (including several in which my losses would be normally game ending). The way I see it, if I'm still alive, I still have a very real chance at getting a come back. I also absolutely love it when my opponent does the same, and get rather annoyed when they don't.

There are times when you are fully dead and cannot come back. There are times when you may be able to rebuild if given a chance. For said chance to exist, you need an ally or allies to help you out/take the pressure off. if you have no ship factories, cannot build new ones, but own 6-7 planets with no allies to help you - you have lost as you won't be able to build a new fleet. You should surrender so people can move on. If you have 3-4 planets left including a ship yard and are producing more ships and you ally is about to attack them, then you should stay in the game. Common sense really. I didn't see any of that from NEWT....

sigh i cant belive u aculy post this whip

RTS players have hidden farms or peons in obscure corners of the map since time immemorial, for exactly this purpose.

Why bother getting a victory on your record when it means nothing??

Victory in a 1v1 is quite different from a victory in a 8 player FFA. The final nail to the coffin is the fact that the victories can be against AI instead of human players.

I'd rather only keep score on the number of games played.

It would also be nice if the host waits for all other non-AI team mates to quit/surrender before quiting/surrendering - that way the winner(s) gets a win and doesn't have to

1) Play the game through against AI to get the win, even though all humans have left the game (i.e. game migrates after everyone else has left)

or

2) Basically the same as above, except that the game locks up and the only option is to quit...

Hi! Im the Famous -=NEWT=- I have many friends on SINS so your "REPUGNANT" post doesnt bother me in the least, but you and your little buddies were extreamly rude, and demanded my surrender, and that just wont do.  So sorry charley, or whatever your name might be.  The fact that you and your 100 plus game buddy defeated me and my two AI Pals and then not even saying GG just demanding that I surrender so you can go and play with your "Skilled" buddies, thats a no no, and consider that your slap on the wrist.  Learn to play nice, ill smurf you next time and pull the same stunt if you try that again.  Not at all very sporting, so remember to use manners next time you play with others cause you never know when I may be learking in one of your lobbys.  kthx.

And so it begins....

It's not over until the last ship is killed or the losing side decides to say its over. end of story.

sometimes playing ot the end lets you try some different strats too like seeinghow long it takes the other team to track down that lone scout ship killing the trade ships and passing the credits on to his team mates ;)

you'd be amazed how easy it is to sit around the far side of a sun and pick off trade ships ;)

The real problem is with the game design, not the players.

Any of you guys watch pro games? starcraft, warcraft 3?  There are some amazing comebacks out there.  A game shouldn't be over till it's over.  The fact that a game can be "over" in Sins, and yet still drag on for another hour.. that's just bad design.

and there lies the source of the problem, if you allow players an oppourtunity to exercise lame play then sooner or later a suprisingly large number will and then the game allows them to slip anonymously off to do it again...

Its all too common in MP games.

So what is the etiquette for this?

I was under the impression that no GG is given by the winner(s) until the opposition say GG themselves as I sign they give up (like knocking over the king is chess), or giving some other indication such as "you guys were too good" or "if my allies weren't noobs" or "if only I had managed to get that roid off of you" or ... (you get the point)!!!

I played online for the first time and lost, but I pulled back planet for planet, built up everything my funds would allow. Dumped all remaining planets and had one last stand against the agressor. If you want me to quit I will fight till the last crewmember dies, rock in hand on his interstellar rubber duck x_x
