Confused about planetary defense, soldiering… Please help.

On some of my planets I’ve been building the structures ‘planetary defense’ and ‘orbital fleet manager.’ As far as I thought I understood them, the former was supposed to boost the soldiering ability for the particular planet on which it’s built, and the latter boost the hp of ships in orbit and organize them into a fleet. But now I am confused. When I’m at the colony screen and click on ‘summary,’ it says that the planetary defense structure is costing 1 bc and doesn’t show any bonus for it, while the orbital fleet manager says it is increasing ships’ hp by 25%, and boosting planetary defense by 50%.  At the bottom of the list there is a total of all the bonuses for each category, and where it is supposed to say ‘planetary defense bonus’ followed by a percentage, it just says ‘planetary defense bon…” So the planetary defense structure doesn’t appear to do anything except cost money, and the orbital fleet manager is boosting planetary defense by a whopping 50%, which seems kind of an odd sort of bonus if it has anything to do with soldiering! Could someone please explain how this works?

Also, when colonizing a new planet, what does it actually mean when you receive a “starship bonus?” I think it means all ships produced on that planet will have more hitpoints, but I’m not sure. Where is this ‘founding' bonus visible afterwards?

Starship bonus is an attack bonus, it has nothing to do with hp.  :)

The "founding" bonus is visible on the Planet Details screen, via the Details button in the Colony Management screen.  You can also use the next and previous buttons within this screen to view the Details for the rest of your planets, rather than having to go to the screen for each of them.

Orbital fleet manager was replaced by the super project orbital command center, which is essentially a civ-wide hyperion defense system, in that it allows you to use all ships in orbit of each of your planets as fleets.  It's better by virtue of only taking one tile total rather than one per planet, but it also doesn't have the logistics limit that the orbital fleet manager used to have.

I'm unsure if OFM is supposed to have all or part of this new function or if it was simply a mistake, but at a minimum planetary defense should provide the boost it formerly did, and I'm seeing it providing no boost in my game as well.

Thanks for the help, Sole Soul, I appreciate the reply. :)

Forgive me but I'm still a bit confused. Does a structure that gives a planetary defense bonus = better soldiering on that planet? And when you say the OFM was 'replaced' by the super project orbital command center, what exactly do you mean? Does the OCC just render individual OFM's unnecessary once it's unlocked, or is the OFM not supposed to be available, only it was left in by mistake? How do I unlock the OCC? Also, at the bottom of the imporvement summary where it gives the totals for each category, does anyone else have the text cut off for planetary defense bonus?

It would be great if a dev would clarify what's intended regarding the OFM and the so-called planetary defense improvement. The OFM giving such a dramatic  bonus to soldiering (if that's what is meant by planetary defense bonus; I'm still not sure) seems odd to me.

The OCC renders OFMs unnecessary-I'm unaware of whether the OFM was intended to have a new function, or was simply left in by mistake.  I'd lean towards the former, if only because I find it unlikely that it was both left in by mistake and given a new function by mistake.

If I remember correctly (can't check at the moment, sorry), there are a number of fields that "cut off" before showing the actual value that they give, and planetary defense is one of them.

Double checked the XML files (because I hadn't actually built a planetary defense) and it is indeed missing the tag that grants it a bonus to planetary defenses, so it's not just a display bug.

Also, for the record, it's not a soldiering bonus.  Essentially, it counts your troops as X% more for combat purposes-so one at 25% on an 8B planet would calculate your combat losses as though you had 10B pop on that planet.

Orbital Command Center is unlocked from Interstellar Construction, which is generally right before Advanced Hulls.
