Wish list

  • Rather than not showing an icon when there is space for half an icon to show, show part of it blending out.
  • Allow for a default scroll bar.  Either the whole fence should be skinned or skin-support should be able to be disabled.
  • This is a doozy.  I get used to the groupings on my desktop and then when I have to oepn Windows Explorer for whatever reason (say to upload a file) I have my mindset on Fence groupings and lo and behold . . my files are not grouped.  Hook into Explore to group by Fence.

I had mail waiting for me for 5 days from stardock to start testing fences : )

What i wish is that fences is separated from sistem, which meens that the icon size can be adjusted from fences also icon spacing,to be more customizable, maybe with some hovering efects especilly for xp users like me who have these ugly icon lebels.

thanks for Fences Stardock

Here's my current wishlist after tinkering a bit.

The basic ones:

  • Ability to place icons on any place within a fence, rather than just next to the existing ones. (the way the regular desktop behaves)
  • Move the snapshots feature to its own tab in the edit window, and merge the two tools pages into one for better availability. (it's ofcourse just my opinion) ... btw, my snapshots only show my desktop wallpaper, and not the layout of icons... doesn't feel right to me

The trickier ones:

  • Ability to open folders within a fence, making it work like a *very* basic directory explorer. It should automatically revert to the regular dekstoplevel after a configurable time (like 20 seconds) and ofcourse include a small back button. - Why? I'll give you an example. Imagine a fence for a basic website directory structure. Rather than having to open up an explorer window, I could quickly browse to some image in a subfolder, and launch an editing software without having to clutter up my desktop with unnecessary windows.... It could also be used for quick shortcuts in subfolders. Would be smooth and awesome

There are tons more I'd want, but I'll try to stick to the reasonable and generally useful things for the time being. :)

mickeko - are you using XP or Vista? If Vista, is UAC enabled? Using DeskScapes or DreamScene? Playing a video dream? Just takin some stabs... snapshots should definitely show the icons on them as well!

Currently I don't forsee having Fences allow for no-alignment (e.g. free-floating icons within them) primarilly as I don't have horizontal scrolling available at this time. perhaps at some point :)

I do hope to have Fences be able to show folders on the desktop... imagine right-mouse-button-dragging a folder, and when you drop it, it creates itself as a fence on your desktop. (The first time you do it it'd show a menu and one of the options would be "create fence for this folder", and if you selected it it would ask "do this every time?"). Anyhow, this would be available on Vista only (not XP) due to tech limitations, but you could even have folders that show in details-view/etc :)  Interesting suggestion though, regarding "open folder IN the current fence"... i'll have to think about that one! noted.

thanks for the feedback!

Ability to change the font of either all labels or individual labels.

I believe skinability will be added once the basic features are implemented and work well. It's the impression I've gotten when reading posts here anyway. :)

So for those having problems with DeskScapes & Fences on Vista, did restarting help for anyone? Or no. Thanks

My only issue is the screenshots lacking everything except the desktop background. (stars dream by neil). It's still there after tons of restarts. :)

Just tested with a static wallpaper, and icons are present on the snapshot. Guess I'll just have to disable animated wallpaper if I want to see what my snapshots look like.

Great App! It's sylish and useful.

The only two suggestions are:

1. Multiple monitor support. Give a setting to choose which monitor you want it to display on. yesterday I god fences stuck on Monitor 2 with no way to change it

2. Individual styalizing by fence (e.g. individual control over color, trans and hue)

Thanks again, love the app.

I like it! Here are my wishes:

1) Autohide fence/fences after opening folders/icons

2) Open folders/icons just by clicking them (not double-clicking)

3) Double-click different areas to show/hide different fences

4) Customize each individual fence (different fences with different colors, etc.)

My desktop looks much better now! Thanks for the amazing Fences!

This sounds awesome!

having an "folder explorer-like" window open constant in a fence.. like your regular download folder.. without it cluttering your taskbar :dur: :dur:

1) Autohide fence/fences after opening folders/icons
End of quote

2) Open folders/icons just by clicking them (not double-clicking)
End of quote

ill second that...

That can already be done by activating it in folder options.

Here's a tutorial if you need more info: LINK

- ability to resize icon to smaller or bigger size, custom size for every single icon or maybe for a single fence
- decrease spaces between icons (xp always driven me crazy with it default setting)
- show full name of the file - no matter how long it is (obviously it wont be too long in 99,9%)
- maybe preview, like in linux for pdf and doc/docx files, and even other files (just imagining things)
- ability to customize fences individually
-

All in all this is great software, I like it very much. Thanks for beta invite

Just a question - can I install Fences on my girlfriends' pc, I have got only one serial. Do you think it can be done? Mine is XP, hers is Vista, it would be interesting to test it there

It's definetely possible to do that, just install impulse and install... I can't say anything about if it's allowed to do though.

My post regarding this was completely ignored but I think its a great idea..

I suggested that the program either become compatible with other software which allow the user to display their icons on the desktop as a List or Tiles view (for the purpose of saving room and displaying the full path/file name), or just integrate that feature into the program itself (which should not be difficult).  The problem with Icons is that they easily take up the most space out of any other view, and for people who want to make multiple fences with many shortcuts and long path names, it can probably get annoying.  Especially for those with low resolution monitors, who want to get the most out of their work space, this could make their lives much easier.

To me it just sounds like common sense that people would want to make a Fence with a list view that takes up only 1/10th the space as a Fence with a icon view and the same amount of shortcuts.  I tried using several of the list view programs that I downloaded with Fences and attempted to manipulate it to work as close as possible to doing what I wanted it to, but it just didn't quite cut it.  I will post a screenshot of what I got it to look like when I can.

What do you think of the idea to have Fences inside folders? As my knowledge of windows tells me dekstop is a part of the explorer, so why cant we have Fences to arrange things in folder?

By the way Zubaz, is this guy you friend now? I mean the one who said - 'I wish Zubaz was my friend'))))))))I think he is 13
