good luck with that.

note: if you do have a legitimate copy of the game, you'll have to register your serial number before you can install updates. in that case you should email stardock instead of waiting for help on the forums. can't remember the email addy off the top of my head, support (at) stardock (dot) net, i think.

That would be the cause of your 'update error'.

That would be the cause of your other problems.

I have a legitemate copy thank you, bought it the day the game was originally released.  I did the update to DLv.15 and the game wouldnt even run.  Sigh Ill probably just have to plop down $$ and get the expansions just to get this game to work properly.

Then you should post *that* debug.err. That way we can eliminate issues that have been long since fixed right off.

If you have a legit copy, then ploping down $$ for the expansions isn't needed to fix your problems (it wouldn't hurt to get them though hehe).  Email support@stardock.com with your issue to help get the serial number problem resolved.

As for the crashing, try updating those video drivers.  Try these suckers out and get back with us:

good spot Loup.  looks like it's an nVidia 6k series, too. it'll run, but that's a really old GPU and i wouldn't be surprised if it caused problems across the board.

So what's that make my geforce FX 5200? :|

And pndrev pointed out the old driver set first, I just gave a link.

I am running a 6 series card and have no problems with DL.

It may not just be the old driver, but the mismatched video resolutions as well.

Running  the desktop at a widescreen res of 1280x768 and the game at 1024x768 can cause problems too.

I used to run giga abundant all (challenging/tough) on DL 1.0-1.4 on the FX-5200 and went allright. Though it was slow as all shit but it worked.....a better card will help out those bigger games....the 7 series cards are real cheap now and good value for money...

Sorry back on topic now......

heh guess i'm just spoiled

Thing is, GalCiv2 is more CPU intensive, than graphics.

I have a 2.8GHz Pentium D with 3GB of RAM, and a 6800GS PCIe video card with 256MB. Not the latest or fastest; it is 3 years old after all.

GalCiv2 is stable and fast. I have zero problems.

I can make the game crash, if I really try. All I have to do is destroy several hundred enemy ships, then invade 25-30 planets - in a single turn. (which is why I save the game often during such a turn)

problem may be due to outdated drivers, or a bad download, or background processes that are running (always remember to exclude the GalCiv folders from your real-time virus scanning - both in Program Files and in My Documents), or using Impulse to update instead of Stardock Central, or the resolution mismatch, or simply that version 1.0 is buggy as all hell.

It is not due to a 6x series Nvidia card (or an FX-5200, for that matter). The 5200 is not DX9.0c compliant (9.0), but the 6x series is.

Ahh Thank you Loup, the driver link was exactly what the doctor ordered!!
