Auto-attack quits working

Auto-attacking ships all move to some arbitrary point and cancel auto-attack mode.

Help, Ive searched, and searched, and searched again...for days...and I cant find any answer to why my auto attacking ships all suddenly go to some arbitrary point in space and turn off auto attack. For some strange reason they decide to meet at some point and quit moving. Ive found that if I manually move them individually or as a fleet they will SOMETIMES restart to attack...(after Ive given them the auto attack order AGAIN). But, then they will pull the same stunt again. Sometimes immediately after Ive given them the auto attack order. Anybody else having this problem. I have the latest version of Dread Lords 1.5 something. And yes there are still many things for them to attack and they are well within their ranges.

Well, its back! The same ole auto-attack bug. This time its with TOA- Latest version. as of August 31st 2008, and at the rate the support for this product moves along my computer will be an antique before I find the cause...or at least the cause is admited too. This is the only forum where people actually do respond and its like watching hair grow. On all the other forums I've found; you can go to lunch and catch a movie before you get to the next page and raise grandchildren before you'll see a response, much less an actual answer to the problem.

Im playing on "Challenging" level. Competition had about 20 colonized planets in the fist 3 months. My economy wont let me support more than 3 for the firt year almost. Wiped out other civs in the second year and now has attacked me. All my military ships are on auto-attack and AGAIN are all moving to some stupid arbitrary point and shutting down. Flying past enemy ships and fleets in a mad dash to get to nowhere.  Im still waiting to find out why my game crashes whenever it feels like it, or why the game slows to a crawl for no aparent reason in the first year. Cannot play a campaign game as the crashes are too horrible. Isnt there a law somewere about getting what you paid for? I feel like Im just throwing good money after bad. Spent $50.00 to get the " UPGRADES " HA! (well, at least it LOOKS better).

Ah well, any help would be greatly apreciated.

No need for the debug.err file or any other fancy footwork as these problems happens in EVERY case. However I will post one if asked. (we all know were the problem lies). Good luck.

Well, cant say the support here has dissapointed me. Not after spending $400.00 in the last 3 months to get all the various parts of my computer up beyond whats required by this game. ( not to mention the cost of DL, DA, and TOA) Just wanted to make sure it wasnt my computer causing the problems. WELL, IM SURE!

These games must have gone through at least 30 min's of beta testing. Cuz, if ANYBODY would have tested these games for more than an hour they would have been looking for the Xanax bottle. It so sad, I cant begin to count the number of games I've purchased that were nothing more than DEMO's of what COULD have been great games.

Well, I've learned my leason. Im gonna start selling blank CD's for $59.95 and tell everybody that calls and complains to wait for the upgrade...LOL....then Im gonna sell them another blank disk and call it "Dark embarasment"...then when they all complain again...I sell them another "UPGRADE" and call it "Twightligh of the Idiot"...man Ill be so rich I'll just shut off the phone lines, give them some forum to waste there day in and move to Monoco.

Auto Attack is a great idea in theory.  Your ships kill enemy ships without requiring intervention from you.  However in practise, it's better to stick them in Guard mode and if an enemy ship or fleet gets too close then they'll become selectable with the Tab key.

I guess though that I'm wasting my time even replying.

Thats whats at the end of my error report. Any ideas?

It looks like file corruption.  I'd suggest checking the hard disk for errors to be safe.  It seems that the problem happened with an autosave (the new autosave being written to a file called autosave.tmp before the old one is renamed and the new one takes its place) which is a disk operation so again, could be a problem with the hard disk if that operation failed.

Depending on your operating system, it might be necessary to restart the PC so that the disk check can proceed.

Computer viruses can also interfere with normal file operations.

Thanks for the response. I have run chkdsk /f and /x and found no errors. I have re-formated my entire HD and re-installed Win XP pro, without SP3, and still getting crashes. I just purchased an upgraded  power supply (585W 38 amps across 2 rails 17amp,16amp respctfully). new Nvidia AGP graphics card (supposed to be the best AGP card you can buy). Just paid to have my system completly check out for problems...$65.00 Nothing... Headache priceless. Sent debug to stardock 3 weeks ago...still waiting for reply. I may have had a problem with a corupt file but I cant send the latest error file as they discourage any further emails until the first one is resolved. I may not be ALIVE by the time we find the real problem.

I don't have an Nvidia card so I don't know them too well, but as far as AGP cards are concerned I'd check that you have installed an AGP driver specific to your motherboard, especially after doing a clean install of Windows XP.

Bring DirectX up to date too if you haven't already.

What tends to work for me when instability occurs is to install different graphics drivers.  Thew newest ones don't always play well with the card you have, or the games you have, it's a constant headache that usually means some games get shelved for the foreseeable future.  But at least I can find drivers that work for the games I'm playing now.
