Configuring Desktop

Color me stupid..... but it sure would be nice to have a bit of a help file for this product.

I"ve got 3 desktops that look alike with icons.  I delete one icon or move one from desktop 1, and the same thing happens on 2 and 3.  So I am obviously missing something, as otherwise the program would be pointless.  I then try the Configure Desktops, click on Exclusions, then click on Add.  I use the Drag Target Icon over icon on the wallpaper.  This gets explorer.exe listed and not the program.

Am I right that I have to have the program actually running to exclude it?  Is there no way to just modify what icons show up on each desktop simply with drag 'n drop or moving some into the recycle bin?  With so many existing icons on my desktop, it will take forever to open each application, link, etc.

I remember an old program from, well, maybe 15+ years ago called PCTools that let you just drap and drop onto different virtual desktops with Win 3.1.

Please tell me it ain't so!

On the exclusion tab, browse to the exe you want excluded (like notepad.exe)

Are you using Mode 1 or 2 (on the advanced tab)?  My desktops are all unique.  I'm using mode 1.

Can you upload a screenshot of your display tab to imageshack.us or somewhere like that and post it here?

I don't have desktop icons, but what ever desktop items I have open on SVD 1 (OD+, DX widgets and objects) shows on all the desktops. Open windows only show on the desktop that I opened them on.

I'm on XP and mode 1. I haven't tried mode 2.  ;)

This is so counter-intuitive to me. I understand now about browsing to the exe, but why am I doing "ex"clusions and not "in"clusions? I have to think, "Okay, I don't want this exe icon on this desktop or that desktop, but I want it on this one." Let's see, if I have 10 desktops, I have to do this 9 times vs doing an inclusion 1 time. I have to stop and think, "Gee, I don't want this exe on desktops 1-7, 9-10 and only on 8." To do that, rather than simply just dragging the icon onto #8, I have to individually configure desktops 1-7 & 9-10 to exclude this one exe. Then I have to do this for each of the over 140 icons I currently have.

Also, what about the folders that I have created on my desktop? They appear on all desktops. There is no exe for them, and if there was, the actual program that creates the folders on the desktop would be the same, just the name of the folder would be different.

I am using Mode 1 (the default). XP-P, SP2.

Zubaz, thanks for your help. I think I am going to pass on using this program, as it is so very counter-intuitive for me and time consuming to set up. Hopefully I can find something else that suits my needs and has a simplistic setup of just drap-n-drop any exiting icon to any desktop -- boom-- done.

Glad I could help, wish it was resolved.  You could email support@stardock.com for an official response (and include the URL to this post).  Stardock improves products based on user feedback.  Even if you don't ever want to use the app again you might improve it for another user.

Thanks.
