Autodesign of ships

Would it be possible to have the ships autodesigned whenever a new engine or new life support was researched?

Also to include in the focus speed and range?

The reason I am asking is that I personally don't like designing the ships, but yet the civilian ships (scout, survey ship, colonizer, constructor, etc...) don't get auto designed.  So I am stuck redesigning the ships.  Possibly there could be a military focus (which is what is already in place) and a civilian focus which would allow be the speed vs range.  The civilian ships would be upgraded with new engines and life support, and a design would be made for every support module.

Thanks

Seems a bit nit-picky at first, but upon reading the whole post, it does make sense. I love the auto-design for war-ships
and it would love our constructors/miners/freighters to upgrade as well. :CONGRAT:

In fact, it's better to use the auto-design since there is usually much more weaponry and defense compared to the ones we can build.  :d

... so that "feature" should be fixed ;) It's a bit annoying to see your own self-constructed ships be inferior to the auto-designed ones ...

Also I vote for the enhancement of the focus feature. I suggest you make it so that each focus area (the three kinds of weapons and defences, range, speed; for sensors I have no good idea) can be adjusted to 0-100% of the available space.
Example: ship has 50 units of space. You have set your focus to 50% beam weapons, 20% beam defence, 20% speed and 10% range, so the AI will try try to cram the most beam weapons in 25 space units, the most beam defences in 10 space, the most engines in 10 spaces and the most life support in 5 space.

I like what lyssailcor suggests, however I see an issue of the left over space (ex: engines are allocated 10 spaces but only use 8, so you have 2 spaces left over). If there are 8 area of focus and each leaves 1 or 2 spaces, then you get enough room for another component. So the computer would need some way to utilize the excess space. Possibly make it that one area can be designated to use any left of space.

Oops, that's correct. Or make another option "use leftover space for ..." and there choose one of the eight areas.
