can you post DX version, OS version, what dx theme or object you are running?
Can you post the event log of the error?

I have the latest version of DX and am running Vista, I get the same error message no matter what object I am running but this one is a weather object. i don't have an error number and I tried to attach a screen shot of the error message but couldn't attach the jpeg.

Thanks,
Paul

If this is not a trial version and you have ODNT:
Is this builder mode,or client? Are you launching DX from the ODNT launchpad or at startup? If so,stop DX from running at start-up.Then launch it from the start menu or desktop shortcut instead. There may be a bug with the launchpad,DX will crash from there with Vista.
For screenshots you will need to upload your image to a hosting site, like imageshack, and insert the link you get from there into your post.

I tried to stop it from loading at start up but it still starts and them crashes. Any suggestions?

Upload the jpg to imageshack.us or some such place and link it here.

Go to control panel>programs>change startup programs>show for all users. If DX is listed there, disable it.
If you have DX running ,r-click the systray icon, select configure>preferences. Then uncheck run automatically. You will need to do this for both client and builder modes.

None of the DX applications are listed in "Start Up Programs" so i didn't have the option to uncheck them. Thanks Paul

Any update on this?

Keep in mind that any widgets you have running at startup (of extension .exe) will in turn load DesktopX as they require this runtime environment. Though they may have the extension .exe, widgets are not standalone.

Generally clearing the object/widget/gadget cache can get things to run smoothly again. Try running this batch file:

I tried that already and still the same result. What else could it be.

The current version of DX has 8 dll's in c/program files/stardock/desktopx.In my case at least one (DirectGUI.dll) needed to be copied into the SDPlugins folder. You might try copying all 8 into it,maybe your setup needs one of the other ones as well. Please try again to post a ss of the error,it would be a great help.

Please find the SS image that I uploaded at the following location.

Just to recap, then: You boot up,try to run DX and get this error.
If you uninstall and reinstall DX without rebooting,it will work fine
If you reboot again, the cycle is repeated.Sound right?
I'm not real experienced yet with DX,but it sounds like a startup program is conflicting with it to me,something that loads before you try DX.Good luck.

This is very odd.  So just loading DesktopX at all causes it to crash on your system?
It only crashes after I reboot the system. It is true that I can uninstall DX and then reinstall it and everything works fine. I agree this is very odd.

I get almost the same issue as Mr Newman. Except my error instead of saying DesktopX.exe has stopped working says DXWidget.exe has stopped working. I have tried to load both widgets and objects and I get the same error message every time. When I restart and DX loads up it say that DX was unexpectadely closed or something similar and that it could have been do to a bad or corrupt widget. I just have the DesktopX Runtime, not the full version and I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1. I have run just the default widgets and objects and none of the ones I have downloaded and it still says it. The only one that doesn't is the default clock widget. I have uninstalled it and deleted the folder and then restarted the computer and then reinstalled it and I get the same error. It doesn't just give me the error when it loads with windows either. If it is not running and I decide to run either a widget or an object it loads DX and then I get the error message then too. It all started after I restarted mt computer one day. Then It has never worked again. I have run the http://sd.stardock.com/mike/apps/clear_cache_dx.bat and the command prompt says that it cleared the cashe but that a registry key or value could not be found. I have another issue too that I don't know if it's related or not. While in either Impulse or Stardock Central it says what version I have which I believe is 3.50 and those two programs says that there is an update to version 3.50.060. When I try to update it says that my key is not a valid key with Impule or SD Central. I have put in several tickets but always get back a response on the serial key issue and not the problematic issue dealing with the bad widgets and objects. Then they slap a issue closed seal on it and I'm still stuck with the problem. It's like Stardock doesn't warrant there products and refuse to supply support. All I got as a response was that the DX Runtime client is not supported in Impulse or SD Central, only the full version is. I have asked for another serial and they don't provide one. At this point I feel I have been decieved on this and that I'm at the point that I just want my money back. Tech support is not willing to address the real issue here. So here I am on the forums to try and continue to resolve this issue. I'm just about at the point to download a pirated version just to get everything to work right. It's a shame too because I have actually paid for the version that I have. If I can't resolve this issue I will have no choice but to download a pirated version of this software. Can anyone please help with this issue? ...::: /\©|d©ØЯΞ :::...

This looks like a problem with UAC. I had the same problem after installing SP1...  To solve it you just need to use Stardock's Tweak Vista. Please look here: https://forums.wincustomize.com/300330

what dtx version number?

has been happening from the begining or after maybe windows or av updates?

I'm using the full version and I've gotten widget errors which seem to be due to scripting or the version of dtx the widget was made with

have you tried the regular Stardock Support page?

you should get an email back with both a serial and download link for the latest version of what you bought, to which you are entitled

try: saving the download from the link receive

uninstall the one you have installed (move any downloaded objects, themes, etc)

{or after you move stuff you want to keep - you can try: The Zapper - made to uninstall SD apps - and you really want to move stuff to keep 1st} - I think it works with Vista

run a cleaner like CCleaner to clear files and registry

reboot

install from the download

reboot
