help -- ship speed bug?

Hi all,

I am having a strange issue with ship speed. I am playing the campaign (2nd scenario).
I am finding that when building a ship with two warp engines (+6 to movement) that the
speed of the ship degenerates to 3 (except for the first move which is 11 due to the
Terran bonus).

In fact this is happening in general. Even on ships with say one impulse drive the first move
they were listed as 6 (7 after warp tech discovered) but for subsequent moves they degenrate again to 3.

My Arnorian battlecruiser also started out at 10 but after subsequent moves dropped to 3.
It was one thing when I just figured that the Terran speed bonus was bugged. Heck I could live with that.
But if adding engines to ships means I never move above 3 per turn. Well that is basically unplayable.

Is anyone else having this issue? Is it only in the campaign? Is it only Terrans? Or does some tech
discovery later on magically open the ceiling up past 3?

According to Stardock central I am playing the latest version (via digital download).
Also I have been playing galciv2 for a long time and never encountered anything like this.

Help please!

I might add that this behavior does not appear to happen
in a non-campaign game. Tried two games (one as Altarian
in small galaxy and one as Terran in immense galaxy).

In both cases I used cheat commands to give myself Warp Drive on first turn and then purchased a cargo vessel with max engines. In both cases seemed to work fine even after 10 turns.
Also in the Terran case it correctly calculated the +30% and +1
speed racial abilities.

Maybe this is only a campaign bug. Wow if so that is a hard pill to swallow to play the campaign through to conclusion.

Any thoughts?

I haven't played the campaign, but the only thing I can think of is whether you are in the Yor's sphere of influence during all this. I think you'd get full movement the first turn the ships is built , but then be down to 3 due to their super ability thereafter.

Yep, sounds like the Yor.

Any race that has a Super Isolationist Super Ability slows down the ships of other races anywhere in their territory to 3 movement points. If you happen to have a planet inside that race's territory, and then launch a fast ship, it will seem like a bug until you get outside of that race's border.

As mentioned, the Yor have a Super Isolationist SA.

Thanks guys!

That was exactly the correct diagnosis ... I jumped straight from Dread Lords to ToA so I had no clue :)

It makes it much easier to deal with when you know what is going on.

This is my first game of ToA since upgrading to it a few days ago. I didn't pay much attention to ship speed initially because I was using basic constructors and colony ships, but I am at a stage now where I pushed through the speed techs and now have access to Stellar Folder engines.

All of my ships, old and new designs, are maxed at 5 moves per turn. I built a constructor with several Stellar Folder engines and the shipyard says it can go...31 pc/wk. When I launch that ship, it is still limited to 5.

I guess there is a game mechanic I am missing? The ships I am talking about are in my sphere of influence, so it doesn't same like the same problem the OP was having. I will say that there was a game event where the Dread Lords appear, maybe they have a unique ability that is limiting my ship speeds?

Tony, your's sounds like the speed limit event. You should of got a popup when it took effect, but some either miss it or are not getting the popup since others have gotten it without knowing it also.

I'm now playing an Immense map game where the speed limit event popped up as the first event. AWESOME! ;)

Thanks for the replies and DethAdder, you're completely right. I'm an idiot, I totally forgot that early in the game I got an event saying that high speeds could be catastrophic.

Just like SewerStarFish, I'm on an immense map. This is going to be a rough ride, hehe. :)
