Balancing Idea for "competitive" play

I have an idea and would like some honest feedback on it. And by honest , go nuts with criticism :P .

Basically we create a Mod for Experts. I know people will wonder , if this idea was viable it would have aleady happened , but simply put ..we just need to kick start this idea to make it happen. As with all mods , the biggest hurdle is getting people to accept it as being widely used enough, that its worth having . Inorder for this to happen all Ironclad need to do is simply make a subforum intended for balance issues regarding this mod. That gives it the seal of special psuedo-officialdom.

The experts can just go nuts with it themselves , agree on balance issues on it themselves and it gives the experts the freedom to update it whenever, rather then waiting for the next patch . As it is ,the expert community is quite small and thus I think with a bit of added maturity and organisation of this very small group of players , this mod can be a success and be the set standard for those who want to use it. If the competitive group was larger , this idea would probably not work , but the small size is what makes it possible imo.

What this means for Ironclad is that they can devote less time/stressing to dealing with balance issues, they only need to make sure that the balance of the patches is satisfactory for the "fun" of majority of casual players which is easier to do then the precise balancing that experts need. They can now devote more time to fixing minidumps etc.

Woo yeah! Let's suck all the fun out of the game like what happens in every other online game with a mod that's generic, stale, static, and relies on an artificial definition of "skill".

I mean..uh..Fox only, no items, final destination only.

The only instance this kind of thing worked was for Dawn of War Pro. It worked there because it fixed GLARING imbalanced in the game, brought oodles upon oodles of content and reactivated things that weren't in the games like GM HWTs and things. Sins right now needs nothing like that. Mods like that only ever manage to do one thing, which is to break up the playerbase into the pros and the nots, which has an adverse effect on the multiplayer aspect and the attitude of the playerbase. I support all the other kinds of mods, I even love them, but the "pro" ones deserve to die IMO. Well, except for DoWPro...

Hey, even if it's a mod made by 2 people, and only played by 10 others, that 12 players taht are having fun. Si why not, if some people want a mod like this, let them have their fun, even if they are a small number.

Sorry, we don't make special forum categories for user projects as a general rule.

Right because if I stop stomping the hell out of noobs the community will die, good to know I'm so important, sure makes me feel good.

How dare we like a platform yet want to change aspects of it to make it more fun for ourselves. I'm sorry that you like broken units/abilities, that we don't, and we understand they're not conducive to competitive gaming.

Fucking tools. I seriously can't believe someone is complaining about the pro players looking to play amongst ourselves instead of just stomping on noobs... Weren't you guys recently complaining about how we join games as a group looking to beat up unsuspecting noobs? Make up your damn mind.

It'd be great to have a game made by these self professed "experts". I've scoured plenty of forums, and I have yet to see an "expert" community make changes that they themselves are satisfied with. For example the point defense mod for HW2 started out as a beautiful mod that changed little to vastly improve the look of space combat. Eventually it turned into this horrible mutant where your best fleet was literally hard coded into the build limits. On the WoW Forums the elitists are nothing more than loud power mongers, looking to push their "weight" around to make the game in their image. That image always ALWAYS includes making their class choice the best in the game.

In fact, when the "experts" actually get the changes that they want, that's when they call the game the most broken! Just look to these forums for all the examples you could want.

What changes that we asked for were added in 1.04, other than a band aid fix to the atrocious market and a feeble buff to the still worthless carriers.

This game's multiplayer is dying quickly anyway though, less and less log onto ICO every day. I'm lucky to get a decent game once a week, GE hardly plays in house anymore with no one else to play against practicing is a waste. And pubs quit as soon as they join. So whatever, this mod won't save the game, none will. The professed "Modability" That doesn't exist won't save the game either. Nor will patch 1.1, I've pretty much given up any hope of playing this game in any sort of competitive manner. I enjoy the game, but I guess not enough other people do, or we wouldn't get less people every day on ICO. But I digress, enjoy your single player, I'll go kill time in age of conan or something untill sc2/demigod.

Making this mod would only split the community into 2, it's a bad idea. As a rule of thumb I am opposed to all mods for this very reason.

Guys the OP of this thread understand and just agreed that it will be easy enough to make his own mod with his own balance changes. No need to further drag this thread thru the mud. At least offer something constructive about a idea for a Pro Mod versus bashing the idea. After all no-one would be forcing people to download the Mod.

I will find it interesting what will be changed for the Pro Mod that will come of this.

While I could see that as a problem, but wouldn't the veterens get sick of playing the game and wanting to try something new? Modding the game provides more enjoyment out of a old game.

For example I can fly a Robotech fighter in ArmA and with the scripts comming out from teh community I can build new missions. Thereby increasing the replayability that the game has.

Because of the great model by this author, I want to create more missions, more interesting stories for this ArmA game.
