Balance question

I am curious to know what people think about the heavy price you pay for having planets far from your capital in loyalty with the resulting loss of significant revenue.   It seems to me that the penalty is way too high in the large and huge maps.    Having only a 35% loyalty makes it hard gather enough resources to research, improve planets and the like.  It would also seem to me that if you had a series of broadcast centers that linked the planets, that should help negate the penalty.

I like the game a great deal, but this part seems really unbalanced and unfairly penalizes you for working on conquering the galaxy on the large maps.  It would be great to see the loyalty and tax base not hit so hard.

Also, what happened to the option to play with high resources?  When I am playing against the computer, I liked having the high resource option availabel to try and overcome the tax and loyalty penalty

Just build communication towers and trade ports. Personally I don't have a problem with the further the planet the less the allegiance.

High resources went out the window in 1.03, for no reason that I can tell. There's an option to increase the speed at which all resources accrue, but no option to change the # of resource roids any more.

I've never really had trouble with what you're describing, though. The allegiance is a pain, but between a few broadcast towers and a few techs, you can get pretty much an entire star system if you're willing to relocate your capital, which you'll usually have to on larger maps. As for the tax penalty keeping you from having the money to research and build...well, by the time you have an empire big enough to really worry about allegiance, your economy should be able to take the allegiance drain and still be quite viable. Underdevelopment taxes are another question entirely, though - those can be tough to get rid of.

Overall, DreamMystic's right....trade ports, culture towers, and I'd say orbital refineries (especially if you're playing Uzii's Sins Plus mod, some planets make the refineries extra profitable).

Does there come a point where you actually start 'losing' money and resources on upgraded planets?

If not, 35% of something is still better than nothing and more logistics slots means more trade ports which give you the same amount (or more) of credits wherever you put them.

Which is to say, I don't really see a problem. I feel the fleet upkeep system is a little odd but that's an issue for another topic.

Yes. The cost of upgrading civilian infrastructure pays off much slower on low allegance planets.

Not really. If you include the amount NOT lost as well as the amount gained per second.

-3.6 credits/s is way too expensive to not upgrade.
Plus, no one is forcing you to colonize planets of the "outer reach."

Personally, in any given map, the majority of my income is usually Trade Ports, especially on a superlarge map.
