Is there a Culture FAQ?

As I understand it:
1) allegiance gets lower the further you are away from your home planet
2) media centres gradually lower the allegiance of enemy planets
3) Cap ships (for Vasari at least) help to protect against this. (Do they also raise allegiance on unthreatened worlds?)

Do media centres raise allegiance of the planets they are built on? Do they raise allegiance of friendly planets nearby as well (ie should one build them just to help far-off colonies have higher allegiance)?

Will your planets' allegiance gradually rise over time even without media centres nearby as long as they are not near enemy media centres?

How is distance calculated for allegiance purposes - number of jumps from home planet or distance "as the crow flies?" Particularly, how is allegiance affected by being in another star system from your home planet?

Aside from research into greater efficiency of media centres and building more of them (and maybe stationing cap ships over your distant worlds) are there any other ways to fight the culture wars effectively?

Capital ships "repel" enemy culture, effectively stopping a certain amount of it from spreading (the rate is on the info card for the ship, and goes up as the ship levels). They don't raise your own culture, the only way to do that is with Media Hubs.

Media Hubs increase allegiance on their host planet, and on nearby ones up to the maximum (listed on the planets info card, its determined by the distance from homeworld, and I'm not sure how distance is calculated). They don't increase the maximum.

Distance is calculated in the number of jumps, with jumps between stars still counting as 1 jump ;)

Which is one of the best reasons to relocate your capital to a planet close to a star, with a lot of jump lanes connected to it- and then fortify the heck out of that place!

Well I wanted to try out peaceful assimilation but it didn't seem to work.

I had a planet 4 jumps from its homeworld surrounded by planets totalling 6 media centres. I was Advent and had total assimilation working for me. And I fired the assimilation cannon at the planet. I went to visit it with my fleet and found that although it had only a single media centre of its own it was at 80% allegiance to its owner!

Is it because I was allied to that owner? Can you only take over planets owned by people you aren't allied to? That would be a pity - I would want to change that rule to allow peaceful conquest...

Yup.

Want to culture him out? You're going to have to stop being friends and take the risk he'll come blow up your media centers first.

I've been cultured half to death myself and used it to break through some really painful defenses (You have HOW many repair structures?!?) when it'd be too expensive to throw a fleet at the problem. S'nice.
