Strategy Guides/more game info

So I'm not really a PC gamer, I'm probably going to get a lot of crap for it. But I heard about SoaSE and thought it sounded awesome. Pretty much the only games I play on the PC are RTSs like Starcraft and the Total War series.

Before I bought the game, I heard there wasn't much of a storyline, and I was OK with that because the story in other games usually kept me from blowing as much stuff up.

I bought the game, and for the first few minutes it was awesome, but I was disappointed in the lack of information given to players.

There are 4 tutorials and a manual, true, but the tutorials are too short and I don't think there's enough depth in the manual.

I was wondering if anyone had found/created a decent strategy guide somewhere. I like the fact that moneygrubbing Prima doesn't have a strategy guide, but that's sort of like shooting yourself in the foot to get out of the combat. It'd be a lot easier if Prima had something available, even though I don't usually buy those guides.

Anyway, I just need something that points out certain goals I should be aiming for as I'm playing. Build X toward the beginning of the match so that you can get a head start on unlocking Y a few minutes later. That sort of thing. BTW, I'm playing as the TEC for the time being.

Any feedback or helpful links would be much appreciated. Thanks.

As fast as the game has been changing (patches have been cranked out fairly quickly since release), it's a bit difficult to nail down specific strategies long enough to be worth writing a guide for.

I'm having trouble finding them at the moment but on the subject of build orders, HuntingX (a regular poster around here) had several threads that outlined effective starting strategies but they may already be outdated and we're getting a new patch again next week (last I heard) which is making some heavy changes.

Anyway, if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. The community around here is generally quick to respond.

take a look at this thread.

it's not strategy but it gives you a decent bases for how things are done, there's also link to sheets of stats that are more usful desciptions than the manual.

that's the ships, as for economy... simply, make sure you upgrade civilian structures on your planets asap, more people = more taxes. also research the mining and planet upgrades to boost resources.

the games really involved, i find, and it's all to easy to get stuck in one part of it. e.g. watching a battle instead of improving planets, research, pirates, etc...

i find that when i keep an eye on everything, my games alot better.

also, if you find your self under attack, you don't have to dig and defend to the last, do enough to make it hard work for him (increase planetary defences), but find another route to him to get some pain flowing his way ;) you may lose a planet (but it's usually a front line planet and not as developed as your home planets), but you could take out all his tech/trade centers if he doesn't pull back to defend.

sins is balanced and open enough that the usual strategies can be applied.

hope that helps, feel free to ask any specific questions

For good general info about all units, structures, and abilities check out this:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/935993/52015

This has some more in depth discussion of actual strategies, and has a very good section on Trade Port mechanics (and related strategies):

Compilation of all the in-game tips:
http://www.soasewiki.com/index.php/Tips

Good discussion of different planet types, stats, and unique planet bonuses:

The main wiki there is also ok:

Finally this clan has the research trees (including detail rollovers) for all the races online. Very pretty. Very useful. Unfortunately it looks like the pages are back under construction:

I would agree that the manual and tutorials a pretty shallow and vague as far as specific content. For example there isn't even a discussion of all the ship/structure abilities in the official documentation, they list them for each ship, but they don't actually tell you what they do. You have to fire up a game and just look at each ship/structures and read the various descriptions... would be nice if i could do that offline when not embroiled in a game =/

I wonder if there are any plans for an official strategy guide? I like this game just enough to be willing to by one... and heh i like pretty pictures =D
