Help me love (and purchase) this game!!

Hi all!

I've downloaded the GalCiv II Gold demo and am a bit overwhelmed. I know, or at least I feel, I can get to really love this game but getting my ass handed back to me time and again is frustrating and not fun at all. My problem is I come from RTS (I did buy Sins and am completley hooked, kudos to Stardock on one of the best, deepest, most addictivley fun RTS games ever) and all the depth and options in GalCiv 2 seem to much for me.

I dont know where to start, what tech to investigate, where to go. Should I go for universal translator? Xenu technologies? Why? In RTS you just... you know amass riches, pump out units, weaken enemy, invade, repel, fortify base, invade and mop up. Here its a whole different game.

How do you guys think it out? Do you plan your tactics in advance? How much do you leave for improvisation? Have you memorized all the techs so you know exactly where to get from where?

Please give me some 4X advice.

It's a very heady complicated game and may not suit the taste of some people. For me, I'll try just about anything if I think I have a chance of getting into it. You need to give yourself a fair amount of time to figure out how to play it. Start really easy with difficulty on the lowest and on a small map and only a couple races. Most of the stuff you can learn through the tutorials and by trial and error. Once you've played a bit and understand the basics, read some of the strategy guides in this forum. It's possible you may never find the game enjoyable, but once you get a handle on it, I think you'll find it's a really amazing game. Best of luck!

Coming from an RTS background myself GC2 can take a little getting used. Once you get a handle on it though, it's an addiction that can last for years :) .

These forums were basically my guide when I got started and some digging can uncover a wealth of information. A lot of which you may not understand just yet, but will as you grasp the game. A good guide I can recommend, written mainly for the Dark Avatar expansion, but helpful for all versions can be found Here. Good luck!

I and others have written some detailed strategies and walkthroughs which are pretty good. Don't overlook the walkthroughs. I had been playing for a while before I tried them and was surprised at what I learned.

There are some on the Wikipedia page and there are a number of them further down the list on this board.
I have posted two that I think are helpful (If I do say so myself.)

The First Turn is the most Important Turn of the Game
&
Comprehensive Influence Victory Strategy Guide

There are plenty of others, but you may have to scroll down a bit.

If you still can't find them leave a message here and I will post new messages on them and bring them back to the top of the list.

Scincerely,
