General Combat Tactics

Howdy,

I just started playing a little while ago and discovered that the various ship types do not handle their own tactics well. Once I assemble a fleet and send it off towards a planet I wish to attack, most of the ships tend to bunch up and hurl themselves at the enemy. Do I need to micro-manage the combats? How do you folks manage engagements and keep ship types at proper distances from the enemy and select targets, etc?

Regards,

Tim

Having just been informed that the bulk of the depth in this game is supposed to be found in micromanaging the fleet battles (something I've never done before, having not had an interest in it and seeing no compelling reason to do so), I too am now looking for realistic advice on the subject.

Depends on the ship.

Carriers, if left alone and have no previous existing orders(Like if you set your factories rally point on the capital ship, they'll go straight there.) will stay on the edge of the gravity well.

Heavy Cruisers will go straight in, where they're best.

LRMs will stop at proper distances.

This isn't much of a tactics game, as strategy. You gotta focus on the bigger picture, often the battles can handle themselves, unless it's really close.

I'm not too micro heavy, but alot of people remove wounded ships and warp them out, let them heal, and bring them back. Or circle a wounded cap ship around so it's harder to hit.

Like Sykonaut said, if your playing the AI and you don't like to micro, the fleet will fight for themselves.
