Will older desktop x themes made for version 2 or before work under DX 3 or 3.2

yes and no.

Generally most of the theme should work except for bits that may have used older plugins that are no longer supported. The further you go back tho the less likely things will work as well or as completely. But I have run themes 5 years old and other than a button here or there they still ran ok. If you run in to any problems you can ask here.
