Playing the Thalans

The one-planet faction?

I was giving the Thalans a try and observed the following:
1. There are no good planets near Thala, no matter how often I restart.
2. There are no buildings buildable, except for the three inital Galactic Achievements.
3. Researching any usable buildings takes a ton of time.

So my game went like that: Build the three GAs, wait for 50 turns for the research to finish (slow tech), buy one planet in the meantime ... wait another 50 turns for another research project to finish.

My question is: Are the Thalans intended to feel like this ... hanging around and catching up to others while not having appropriate techs in the mid-game because of being stuck to just one planet?

What are your experiences?

It sounds like you're playing the TA beta, not DA.

I've only gotten to start a few games as the TA Thalans, but I'm pretty sure that the map is "normally random." The Thalans have never had a good second planet in their home system, but in my current game, I started in a corner with two very high PQ worlds plus a few decent ones in nearby systems.

Re the initial buildings, yes, I belive that is the intended experience. I never knew the Thalan back story even though I've barely ever played as another civ. They are weird bugs from a distant timespace and just the business of living on a planet is a weird challenge for them.

I'm not sure, but I suspect that Slow Tech + TA Thalans is setting yourself up for a really big challenge. I've gotten into an OK position on an Immense map by working hard on research with an early focus on econ and population, but I might only be getting away with that because the rivals are so far away and have each other to worry about. I'm still worried that I won't be able to build enough respectable ships before someone decides bugs look tasty.

You are right. I was playing TA, not DA.

Thanks for your feedback.
I guess I will repost in the appropriate forum.
