while idle in lobby

Sometimes, I'll be sitting in the lobby and walk off for a few minutes.  When I come back the mouse cursor is seriously lagging.  I ctrl+alt+delete out of the game (which takes 5 minutes to do), and it shows CPU @ 100%.  I don't believe it can be a hardware issue because I'm in the lobby at idle.  It's not supposed to be using that many resources just sitting in the lobby.

@General_Failure

:) I respectfully point out that you haven't the slightest idea what you are talking about.

Please read the following linked thread (particularly reply # 31) . :)

Been playing now since the day of the official release and have been following the forums on the issues. My system is
Pentium Dual Core E2140 1.6GHz with 800MHz FSB
3 GB ram on ASUS motherboard model IPIBL-LB
NVidia GEFORCE 8500GT with 512 MB
Logitech MX3200 wireless mouse and keyboard
Acer AL2016W monitor
So far I have not experienced any major issues. Typical FPS run around 30 with an occasional drop to 4-5 but no noticeble problems.
I have had no lockups either. After reading this thread I checked CPU usage and found both to be running fine CPU 1 around 50 to 70% and CPU 2 - 30 to 60%. All things considered I think this is fairly decent. I have also played the game on my laptop which is a Compaq with a AMD processor around 1.2 GHZ and 256 MB ram with just the standard mobile video card. Even on it the game runs fine, if not a little slow. Anyway if anything the only issue I have is there seems to be a slight lag in the mouse. I will click and then as I move it will activate the button I am moving over instead of where I clicked, which may be mouse related. So all in all compared to some games I have played I say hats off to SOASE.

Well I personally think General_Failure is generally right. It is well known that SupCom (a massively scaled RTS like Sins) makes marvelous use of 4 cores.

And I disagree with what that guy says in the dual core thread. He's reiterating the same excuses I heard way back in late 2006, except back then dual-cores were relatively new. I have never read anything anywhere that suggests either Intel or Amd will ever go back to single-threaded (or cored) chips. Nehalem is going to have up to 16 threads, and that's just the near future.

This game doesn't efficiently use more than one thread, which is a bit sad considering that it's 2008 and the game slows down in large battles due to cpu load.

Note:
100% cpu load (or 50% on two cores, it's the same really) in task manager doesn't necessarily mean that your cpu is being stressed to the limit or is insufficient. When I run Civilization 2 on my modern computer, task manager tells me that each of my two cores is being used 50%, which is a joke. It has to do with the programming of the game, I suppose. I could post a screenshot if anyone is interested :P

Would like to point out, you're high Thoumsin when it comes to games/apps that don't use multi-threading or SMP(google if you don't know what it is).
End of quote

First, you have SMP and multi-threading who are two thing really different... and this is mainly related to the operating system...

By example, Windows XP professional have a support for two physical central processing units (CPU). These support don't exist in the home edition that a LOT of people use !

Because the number of CPU cores and Hyper-threading capabilities on modern CPUs are considered to be part of a single physical processor, multicore CPUs are supported using XP Home Edition.

In my own case, if i was using XP home, only 4 of my core will be available since SMP is not really supported... more bad, my Xeon 5300 "Clovertown" are in reality consisting of two dual-core Woodcrest chips in one package... so, with home edition, it only see two core...

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating systems support SMP. Among the 32-bit versions, MS Windows Server 2003 Web Edition supports two-way SMP, the MS Windows 2003 Standard Edition supports four-way SMP, the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition supports eight-way SMP and the Datacenter Edition supports 32-way SMP. The 64-bit Windows Server 2003 versions support the same SMP standards as theri 32-bit equivalents, except for the 64-bit Datatcenter editions, which includes a 128-SMP version that includes two SMP partitions with 64 SMPs each...

I think that it is normal that the creator of Sins don't use SMP function since the game is make for the more used system, i mean windows XP home edition...

But yes, game engine already exist... Emerge was created to demonstrate the advanced multiprocessor and multicore support, native platform specific optimizations, and powerful rendering capabilities of Emergent's Gamebryo Elementâ„¢. Originally shown at GDC 2007, Emerge is fully cross-platform (PC, PS3, and Xbox 360). Emerge also highlights Gamebryo's integration with top-tier technology partners including PhysX, Scaleform's GFx, and RAD Game Tools' Miles Sound System.... take a look at http://www.emergent.net/en/Multimedia/Videos/Emerge-Video/ voor a video...

well okay maybe there is a difference between "smp" and "multi-threaded" but I don't think anyone here was talking about motherboards with dual sockets...

WinXP home supports dual core processors as you say, and as far as I know it should support quad core processors, including Intel's. Never heard anyone complain that xphome can't run a q6600 properly....

...which still leaves me wondering why my cpu is at 100% while idle.

idle meaning not actually playing the game--just simply having the application open.

Well I think that's just how the game runs. It's not a particular problem of your computer.

See it always either runs 100/0 or 50/50, it doesn't mean your cpu can't handle the game.

I have a QX6700 @ 3.4ghz
2x 8800 gtx in sli

And the game often bugsout and starts up a few rundll.exe and often causes the pc to be unstable after playing.

All four cores max out with 25% load on each from sins, and the dll.exe's it runs up.

even after closing the game (quit ingame), it stays in running process's and causes slow down.

are you sure its the actual exe file for sins that is at 100%
because i had a problem although unrelated to this game in where Norton was making my
windows explore exe run at 100%

IF YOU HAVE NORTON GET RID OF IT!!!!

yes it's the sins exe.
