Does the AI always have to team up against me?

Played a medium and large random map today and no matter what I do the AI hates me.  Every time it goes as far to form a grand galactic alliance that wishes my destruction,  On a medium map I can take 3 AI's constantly invading, thats fine.  On the large map when I have 10+ fleets from far off stars with nothing better to do than chill in my space, and neverendingly try and take my little chunk of the sector.  Any attempt at diplomacy is normally tossed aside, why ally with me when you have a bunch of AI buddies.

So I ask please for 1.03 or beyond make the AI bicker amoung themselves more.  Make the missions optional, now they are just outright demands. 8 on 1 is more than i can handle.

love the game, keep up the good work!

I was just about to write a post about the exact same thing. I play on Normal and Hard difficulties and it appears to me that all the enemy AI have teamed up against me because they're all sending massive fleets my way, plus pirates on top of that.

In my current Hard game, I can handle it now, but it's hard to eliminate an opponent in my star system (plus pirates) when two other opponents from another star system keep assaulting me and keeping my forces spread out. And on top of that, they always run away when I've got a great fleet to push 'em back, but that's a whole other topic.

I know next time I'll just lock teams.

You can somewhat use the ai 'fear' of your major fleets for defense purposes. I actually tend to leave the bulk of my fleet as defense and make small fleets for quicks strike offense. This works very will with either choke points or if you own a whole star system on a big map just camp the star.(i preferably have a huge carrier fleet)Believe it or not, even pirates will be afraid of attacking you if you have huge enough of a fleet defending the only way into your systems. I had thousands and thousands being put on my head and was "most wanted", but when they sent out raids they would insted go after anyone but me that had cash on them.

Also, if it makes you feel any better the game seems to only gang up on you realy bad if you are top dog.

That's why I tend to play with locked alliances. If the AI doesn't team up on me, resulting in a generally unfair game, then I can usually manage to team up with another AI and easily destroy the remaining ones who often can't form satisfactory alliances with one another.

Locked alliances is ok for a short term fix but it's clear the AI still has some bugs to work out.

I have full confidence that IC/SD are aware of it and fixing it. SD's past history of AI improvements and all.

It would be great if you could see who the AI is allied with.

In the first times i did the mistake that i left a planet unprotected because my AI ally had a huge fleet there but then the ally of my ally attacked this planet and my ally did nothing.

Hehe. I was just complaining to a coworker about this very thing earlier this week. I had a large FFA game going, and what do I find? Four large AI fleets all hanging out together one jump away from my outlying colony. Considering how annoying it is to keep your "allies" happy in this game, it really felt like the AI was cheating in their little grand alliance they had going.

I got hit that hard on a huge map with 8 Easy AI (was 9 but i killed one early) that I had to do a rapid migration all the way across the system to a more defendable group of planets with my entire fleet. My last planet had about 1000/6000 health left when I made a new colony on the homeworld of the AI that took my last planet. I'm now in his former teritory, he is now in the old teritory of the one i killed and my old are is now controled by 2 AI that have now gone to war against each other.

Each AI only considers your fleet and it's fleet when you attack even if it has 3 allies with huge fleets. I decided to attack the 4 AI fleets next door in what I thought would be me going out in a blaze of glory but 2 ran and 1 sat on the other side of the planet while I went head on into the 4th fleet which eventually pulled out too after I killed 4 of his cap ships.
