OK, the ai in this with the alliances is alright, my only problem is that the missions they give have no relation to their alliances.  many times i was put against their own personal allies, doing hit and runs just to get a 100% happeness but then when I watch them fly through that very space they dont attack / get attacked...   So now im currently in a war wirth 3 allies that are allied with my enemies but not fighting them thus im bottled in.

locked teams is too easy I want the mission system but I want it to portray their actual state.

I mostly agree with you. I like the diplomacy and such, but like you said, they should have put more time into it. I wish i were able to make really complicated diplomatic relationships like i would in a "total war" game or some other 4x.

i liked the diplomacy in knights of honour...but its style wouldnt have worked too well with this game..but it was still some of the best diplomatic coding ive seen for a game so far
