AI Agression

One easy way to make the game more challenging would be to have some AI teams declare war and attack early in the game. I have used this tactic to great effect myself. Even with minimal fire support, a few loaded transports can wreak major death from above before battleaxes appear. This would keep the human player from feeling safe to concentrate on social and tech issues early on.

I've had them attack me early, if they start well and I don't build enough defence quickly. That said, the AI is quite bad at following up attacks with Transports, which would hurt it's chances in a "rush" quite a lot.

Something for Brad to work on, since I know he's getting bored... ;)

That's true, I had several games where I planet-rushed too much and neglected my defenses. Result? After some time the militarily strong races grew hostile and declared war on me.

It's becoming almost a gamely ritual for me... expand, get extorted 3-5 times, give them what they want each time, and THEN build a military to crush them. As long as they don't start demanding planets from me, everything is usually fine. :p

LOL I usually never give in to the extortion. I get to pissed at them. So I have a lot of early defensive wars that are dangerous to me.

My current game has been unexpected in several ways. First, my first contact with other races was with the Yor and Drengin, al a Terran sandwich. So, for the first time ever, I decided it was time to play evil.

Despite this, I haven't been in a single war. I haven't been extorted. Of course, I've also got the biggest military, though it's pretty old stuff. The Altarians are hostile towards me, but everyone else is O.K. with me.

Also figured that I'd do my diplomacy a little bit differently. Normally, I play on the level, but this time I figured that I would take out a few starbases on resources I wanted by parking a dreadnought next to them and giving them to the race (Drengin) at war with the owner of the starbases (Altarian). Well, I got them in place, created a basic starbase to make sure that the dreadnoughts were in operational range. I granted them to the Drengin, and hit "End Turn." And my jaw hit the ground as the dreadnoughts ran for home anyway. I'm talking a big tough dreadnought running from a 4 DEF starbase sitting on resources that would cripple the Altarian war effort against them. All became clear when at the start of my next turn, my agents reported that the Drengin had ended all of their wars. O.K., so giving the Drengin several Dreadnoughts when everyone else was using battle cruisers had rammifications that I hadn't predicted, like shifting the balance of power enough that noone else wanted to mess with the Drengin.
