Technician has a good one that you can vary so you can play military or cultural instead of alliance. You can also look under the strategies part of the forum, which is how many of us learned.
A fun thing about Gal Civ is you can win several different ways and get random maps. You can play campaigns if you choose. You can also play empires and metaverse, which is unique. I don't play as fast as some but there are enough good things about Gal Civ that I have played GC and AP longer than any computer game in the last 20 years.
The metaverse is not for everyone. If you look at the top 25 players, they play many games, and have from 60 to over 1000 recorded. It took me about 50 to 100 games to get comfortable playing all the strategies on all the map sizes at all difficulty levels, so hang in there if you don't pump out 60k games right away.
Another things is you don't need sound to play. I play the game and listen to music. Some particulary great passages of music, I stop playing and just listen. You are not going get in extra games that way but you may play for months longer. Don't forget to have fun.
