Story line

So, if there's no campain, will there be any progresion of the storyline? Do we get to see what's chasing the vasari? Or is that more for an expansion pack?

ummm you are confused, there is a story, it will be told, just not yet...

What was said is there is not a campaign in the traditional sense!

what would be cool? released "events" much like in an MMO, only of course it would be individuals instead of groups (Lans maybe...)

Or maybe tournaments that would decide the next leg of the story...

Hmm, I didn't know this. I'm going to be seriously disappointed if there's no serious single-player storyline to follow. I didn't like the Galactic Civilizations way of doing the story. Same thing with Sword of the Stars. It's fun for a skirmish every now and then but nothing beats a proper campaign.

I know what you mean, and ill be the first to say i was disappointed, as i thought for 2 years id see a new great scifi story.

But, now that we know we better get used to it (i have, so im sure everyone else can :P), and what can we do? we can of course come with some suggestions and hope that Sins sells well enough for them to make an expansion where they focus on a campaign.
Also we will get to know the story no matter what, since Blair said in another thread:

the Sins story will be released in some form or another. You have my word. Even in the worst case where the master version of Sins gets deleted by mistake before going gold, I have to go back to working at McDonald's and I'm revealing the story in some obscure blog in the seediest recesses of the internet from my rat infested apartment on a 14.4k internet connection.

So if Sins sells bad i guess we will see Mr Blair at McDonald's

So what did we get instead of a campaign you might ask, well we got a hell of a great game thats for sure. We also had the chance to have an influence on how the game will be, which ive never seen or heard about before.
Theres also still the Advent that haven't been released yet, as well as lots of other stuff. :D

So it might seem bad right now, but as one might say "theres always light at the end of the tunnel" :CONGRAT:

Unless the tunnel collapses... :p

Lack of a story told out in the game is a big knife in my heart, especially with all the goodness that is posted here :

https://www.sinsofasolarempire.com/lore.aspx

We all know the game is going to get clubbed by the reviewers for the lack of a story/campaign. What we don't know is if the reviewers will see the best parts of the game: the multiplayer aspect / sandbox of limitless possibilities / and super mod friendliness...

I hope they do, because it is what really shines. And hopefully they are the right kind of reviewers who love this type of game are the ones reviewing it! If they review the game for what it does have , its easily a 8 or even 9 outta 10 by the way the Devs and Stardock are talking about the awesomeness of the internal builds.

I guess in 20 days we will all find out...

I am also wondering what sales number in Stardock's eyes would be considered successful enough to go ahead with a expansion and maybe even a Sins 2?

Think of how great any game could be if all resources are first devoted to solid mechanics and gameplay - then all resources are solely devoted to the campaign!  Who knows, we may see a trend :)  Either way, we perfected with the resources we had available and the game is fun as hell :)

I cannot wait to see you in the gravity well of battle, with Multi by my side, as I can't seem to ever win a game by myself... :SURPRISED:

What I'm wondering is why you think having Multi by your side will actually help your odds instead of lowering them even more

Sins will have all the aspects of a story. Characters, plots, events, evil civlization, and of course a glorified protagonist(ie you?) It just wont follow any set line of events, each game you play will have its own 'campaign' in escense. Some things will be consistent, but the rest will be very random and unique.

At least thats how I understand it.

Don't worry Multi builds his ships for him, they have this deal going.

Have any of you read "A Deepness in the Sky" by Vernor Vinge? Its seems that the TEC and Advent are in some ways similar to the Qeng Ho and Emergents from that book. It even has the Advent "focus" techs.

That also means that the Vasari are probably running from the thing in "A Fire Upon the Deep". "Deepness in the Sky" was a prequel to "Fire Upon the Deep". I think the communication sapping thing was called the "Blight".

Both by Vernor Vinge, and both excellent. I think both won Hugo awards.
