Have you ever had an non-adversarial job review?

I'm curious about the experience of others in the work force -- have you ever worked at a job where you didn't feel that your regularly schedule job review, the type of review that helps determine the increase in your salary in a given year, didn't feel like it was set up as a confrontation between the company and yourself?

In many companies it seems that you get a review where you are made to feel as if you are supposed to be defending the work you did throughout the year, and justifying why you should be getting more salary/wages because of the work you've done or will be asked to do in the coming year.

Have you ever worked somewhere without it feeling somewhat hostile between the two sides?

How does it feel at your current position?

Yes, at my current job.
My first review was by the CEO, he basically said that I had exceeded his expectations and then he gave me a commission check that exceeded MY expectations.
It seems to have worked out alright as I am approaching my seventh anniversary with the company.

I don't know why more companies can't get this kind of thing right. The costs of hiring and training replacement employees far exceeds what it would cost to retain the employees they have. If those same companies are continually hiring employees that they don't want to retain.... they have a bigger problem.

I have never worked at a job where the job review was adversarial.  The worst is when you work for PHBs, but I just smile and take them.  The best is where they accentuate the positive, while adding suggestions for areas of improvement.
