Question regarding planet class and improvement

As you improve a planet, the class-number increases correct?

Is there a way to tell how much you'd be able to improve a low-class planet (say, 1-4) *before* you send a colony pod there? I don't want to waste a colony on a 4 tile planet unless I can improve it to say 8 tiles or better.

Yes, each terraformed tile adds to the PQ.

As far as I know, there is no way to tell exactly how far you can upgrade a planet before landing a colony. The important thing to know is, lower quality planets get more improvable tiles. For example, a class 1 planet will end as a class 10 minimum, and frequently as high as 19! Class 8 or so is about the minimum a planet can end as.

Note: this is all for Dark Avatar, and presumably Twilight of the Arnor. In Dread Lords (pre-expansion) each planet gets 3 tiles regardless of beginning class.

Not exactly correct. In DL planets class 15+ get two tiles for every terra tech. Not working in DA. :(

I've noticed in my TA games that PQ 4 planets consistently get 4 + 4 + 4 tiles, or end up at PQ 16, while 5+ seem to always get 1 + 1 + 1.

I haven't colonized a 1-3 yet. I hardly ever see one the AI hasn't snapped up, and for some reason, they don't like to trade them to me.
