I've got free time and want to learn how to mod better

With christmas holidays here, I've got some time on my hands to do stuff. One of the things I want to do is figure out how to some serious modding. The whole racial tech trees have got me interested, so I want to learn a few things so I'm ready for when the editors are handed out.

I've tried looking around to get the information I want, but it seems that some links are not working, and other information doesn't seem to exist. As such, I'm asking for specifics here.

1. The first thing I want to know is, how can you make custom jewelery, and base hulls? I don't know how to make a 3d object, or what tools to use for that.

Thanks in advance for any help.

To make a 3D object you need a 3D program, like 3D Studio Max or Lightwave 3D.

A freeware program like Blender will work too, but it won't be as easy as in a program you spend $2,000 - $4,000 on.

You first have to model the item, then texture it. Then you have to add the hardpoints and save it to the correct format.
It is not an easy task to learn, by the way.
Expect a very steep learning curve.

I was hoping for some more information, but I guess this will do.

Anyhow, thanks. I'll post back if I make some progress.

I think this is because 3d-moddeling is a complicated topic with relatively few people involved in it. You can learn XML in a week or so if you have some background knowledge, but I think becoming a good 3D moddeler can easily take a year to get some routine to it. I think most people who create 3D material for Galciv II are people who already work with this stuff as a job or hobby not related to Galciv..

I would love to have the skills to create my own 3d material, but for me the challenge is too high, I just don't have the time.

Well, this is what I've managed to get thus far. I've skipped some stuff in a tutorial I found, so I hope this is enough.

Anyhow, I would like to know if this is enough to make a piece of jewelery, or a base for a hull. I really don't care if it looks good or not at this time. I just want to know how to finish what I start so I can get the motivation to make a work of art.
