You should be able to boot into safe mode, [F8].  Do that.
Uninstall Bootskin and reboot.

Once in safe mode, you can also rename the vidstub.sys file located within C:\Windows\System32\Drivers to anything else (i.e. vidstub.sys.old) as a fallback option.

Don't use BootSkin. It will render your system useless. The program installs malware called vidstub.sys that will prevent your system from booting. You will have to reset your BIOS and reconfigure your entire system after removing the BootSkin malware virus.

That may be the most rediculuos statement I have read in these forums. And no doubt, it was made by someone who is uninformed. I use bootskin, and have never had any kind of problem starting my pc.....

For anyone reading this who is not sure, just do a search for vidstub.sys. In all the pages my search returned, there was not a single reference to it being 'malware'....

Don't risk your system with BootSkin. It's not worth all the hassle. Just Google "vidstub.sys" and see all the problems caused by this application.

Ive been running boot skin for years...no problems here, as well as no Viruses...

beats the heck out of me what hes going on about..

You obviously don't have the slightest clue what you're talking about. Stardock is a Microsoft certified partner and doesn't put malware in ANY of their products. You should do some real research before coming on this site and making those kinds of false accusations.

The reason bootskin might not work is because of BIOS incompatibilities, not because of imaginary malware. It is easily reversible as Zubaz and milksama have explained.

the very first Google search item... WWW Link

File net one of the many File explanatory sites that give Details about services and files on your PC.... no where does it say malware etc..

Try really researching before offering bogus accusations ...

...another thread was not needed for your gripe.

You had a bad run with bootskin.

It will not work on all computers.

There is NO malware/spyware/virus or ANYTHING harmful there.

There are instructions in THIS thread on how to remove the program if it does not work for your computer.

I have removed your post. Please do not post another.

The guy's been a member (though not a subscriber) since May 2006. He's only dl'd 4mb of stuff. Why do you come here? Hopefully not just to post this drivel.....

.. I have used Bootskin since 2005 no problems ... and that was a year before I bought Object Desktop ...

Bootskin is pretty hit and miss. Since there have been no updates in a long time we just offer a few different versions. If one does not work just grab one of the two other links on the download site. If none then there isn't much that can be done.

I'm so glad i came across this post, my computer would not start it would loop about 30 times before it would actually load up my Vista Ultimate.
and the error recovery screen would continue to pop up every time i restarted, but i uninstalled boot skin and deleted vidstub.sys and all the values from my reg that had anything to do with boot skin, and every thing worked again, it worked fine before on my previous computer not sure what caused it to slaughter my computer now, i just hope they find a fix for this or actually update the program since it's pretty ancient

BootSkin will not be updated for Vista unfortunatly. There was some work being done on a BootVista however with SP1 coming out it was put on pause and certain criteria had to be met for it to go forward, or if it even would. At this time development is on pause. There will be news updates in the future on Wincustomize.com I'm certain. If something does come up I will be happy to post it.

Hay!

PLIZ help me, I got some Probs with rebooting my PC...

My PC crashed and as I wanted to reboot, my PC got stuck in a blue error-screen.

Okay, try save mode, I thought.

So I did, but nothing does happen...

It just shows the white bar and starting Windows-title, but that's all.

Once the bar has reached the right end of my monitor, it stopps and that's all what's happening.

Tried every single alternative, I can't get it refloating...

PLIZ, HELP!

Don't tell me I have to format my HD!

Pliz, don't! There has to be another way...

*Edit:

K, I see it has rebooted now, save mode.

It just takes HOURS! I got a 2k Professional and its loading the LogIn right now... but damn SLOW.

Is this normal...? 6 Minutes of loading for save mode...?

Well, I hope he DOES it at least.

Why don't you guys try to add something to the Bootskin-programm that prevents the PC to get unable to boot correctly...?

Something like... a changed Skin for the CHKDSK-Screen could be added, too. If it works, why not...? It would help many People with this Problem - and looks cool, too.

^^

So, it seems to be stucked at the 'Press Strg+Alt+Del to login'-Screen... hope it just SEEMS to be...

Okay, it works.

So, everyone, don't panic (like me^^) if it seems to freeze while loading the save mode...

It could last... 10-20 minutes now - but it works, at least.

Hope I can solve my Prob to just changing to no skin and rebooting - hope it works.

And... this malware-thing's completely new for me. Nonsense I think, why should he say that without posting a Link to a page where this has been said...? Well, because of the page it was on - maybe it's a really unrelieable page - or its just NOT TRUE.

Well, gotta log in now^^

Cya.

BTW, nice Program so far. If you just could add this module... to prevent this Problem to happen.

And pliz be gracious with me and my english... I'm german^^

HELP!

I know what I did was dumb, but I just wanted to see if it would work. And it didn't.....

I installed BootSkin on my Vista. Yes. I know. Madness.

Please help. I start my pc, it goes to this white bar saying "loading system files" or something, then the normal vista loading screen, and then System Repair. But System Repair isn't able to repair it. So I tried going in Safe Mode. That doesn't work. When I click Safe Mode, it starts to load the files, stops half way through and then again back to the first stage; the white bar > vista loading screen > system repair.

What do I do? Is there any way I can solve this without losing all my files?

Nevermind, I figured it out. I am so awesome!

I go into System Repair right. And then it tells me that it can't do it. So then I click, "Open Command Prompt". From there, I just navigate to the directory I installed Bootskin to, and then type in "unwise.exe", press ENTER and VIOLA! It's done!

I'm glad to hear that it was cleared out for you. Just so that you know BootVista is still in the works as a project.
