Woolworths is still in business? I thought they died years ago.

What's left of Woolworth's is now Footlocker. Before they closed the Woolworth's stores, they bought Kinney Shoes and then created the Foot Locker brand stores. The only stores that survived in the end was Foot Locker.
Don't think Woolies here is related to either the UK or US stores, tho

They are in a small way, in its prime Woolworth's sold franchises overseas. In the end, the franchises out lasted the parent company.

Do you see that anywhere in my thread?

No, what's your point?

Forget it, the quotes in this thread are all screwed up and I don't know who's saying what.

Yep, that's it... they bear the same name... but the similarities end there. Woolies here is wholly Australian owned... which in a way is sad... it means our own people are screwing us at the checkout, rather than a foreign entity.

Also, Woolworths Australia is screwing our farmers?primary producers. A brother-in-law down in Tassie still gets the same 11 cents a kilo for his peas that he got in 1986... yet the price at the checkout has risen more than 600%.

Another brother-in-law down there was getting just $1.49 per kilo for his lamb, while Woolworths was selling it for between $6.00 and $12.00 per kilo at the checkout... depending on store location and if there was a small butcher nearby they'd want to put out of business by selling below 'his' cost. Denny now has another buyer after telling Woolies where to shove it, and while he's still not rolling in dough, he's not going to the wall any more, either.

Many here will blame the drought for farmers going to the wall, and it is responsible for much of their hardship, but if they had been given fair prices for their produce in the first place, a lot wouldn't have banks foreclosing on their properties and putting hard working families out on the street. And don't get me started on the banks... greed driven entities who, like Woolworths, only care about their executives and wealthy stockholders.

Makes you wonder what they'll do once they've eliminated all the small people who do the dirty jobs they wouldn't or don't know how to do. Oh, that's right, they'll import lead laden products from overseas... explains why you can't buy home-grown products in your local stores, why there's no manufacturing or farming jobs, dontcha think.

In most cases, our own people have sold us down the drain... er, toilet.... while our governments are sprouting off at the mouth about the great shape of the economy. What fucking economy?? Here in Oz it's an artificially created set of figures based on... er, fuck knows what it's based on, but it sure as hell ain't riding on the back of what we produce any more... same in the US, without the war economy you got bugger all real economy, just false figures and the same false sense of security we have here in Oz.

So yeah, it really pisses me off when I see people (with obviously their heads in the sand/up their....) defending these corporate thugs, saying: "but it's their business and they can do what they like!" Geez it irritates me something fierce when people say shit like: "but that's business.", because 'that's just business' does irreparable harm to ordinary working families via high prices, extremely low minimum wages and/or lost jobs. :(

I have to say I did shop comp USA and did find a lot of bargins in those bins, you have to dig I tell ya, but they are there.

Some of the monitors are the best prices anywhere but don't know how long they last, maybe as long as a bic lighter. Don't know.

Bought two computers from Best Buy but hell, this one is old and slow now. Can't afford a new one yet but hoping soon. This one has been upgraded as far as it can be, I think.

I hate to see people out of work but it happens all the time and most times around Christmas. I makes me sad but I would rather lose my job before the holidays than after. I thought hard about this and found out it would be better before because you haven't spent all your money on christmas and credit cards maxed out then be without a job. This way your friends will know you lost your job and you won't be giving much. Good way to give less too.

Hey so I am a scrooge but I really am not into the christmas thing and hate spending money I wouldn't spend anything on other times a year. They generally don't buy me anything and then it's just makes us both look stupid.

Anyway back to Comp USA. I have given gifts from there for people with computers, games on sale, programs on sale, new mouse, Keyboard, stuff like that for me and others. I will now pay more because they don't have the cheap stuff bins anywhere else I have shopped.

If you know who does, let me know.

There are going to be some good bargains to be had there, during the holidays, before they close  :)

That holding Company said they will close some stores and keep some open.   I never really say the bargins and yes they  did carry a lot of software.  Bought some there.  But they were over priced on most things and very discouteous. ;)

okay, my mother was an English teacher, so let me just clear this up for anyone with any questions.... it's: is a contraction of "it is" or "it has"..... its: is a possessive form of "it"

i.e: It's been a long morning (contraction), or; I saw that movie on its opening night (possessive)....

The confusion lies with the apostrophe. Possession is generally defined by an apostrophy (at least in the English language). Examples: The car's windshield; the dog's tail.

However, in the case of it's, this is not true.....

Hope that clarifies things a little.....

Wom, I popped by one of the CompUSA stores here in Denver a few days ago to see what bargains were up for grabs. Everything and I mean everything was discounted to sell. I was looking for a new wireless keyboard and mouse but when I compared their discounted prices with some of the offerings in Bestbuy, nearby, I found that I got a better deal in Bestbuy. I picked up a Microsoft 4000/5000 bundle for 50 bucks.......these sell at about 90 bucks elsewhere. Whilst in Bestbuy I spoke to some of the other shoppers who had been to CompUSA and they had picked up some real bargains but several said you had to be careful and know your product and price because not all the discounted prices were as good as they seemed.  :)

Discount + Overpriced product = Regular price for product.

I remember FW Woolworth growing up in Brooklyn NY. Compared it to the old five and dime
stores at the time. Mom and pop places where cokes were ten cents and bazooka bubblegum was a penny. Oh for the good 'ole days. Bye Bye CompUSA...it's been fun.

Hey Uvah if you read the news release it looks like Tiger Direct is going to keep some stores open and use the name of CompUSA.

I grew up in PA along the Delaware across from Trenton, NJ. For us it was Kressges 5&10.  ;)

As long as Fry's doesn't close their doors I'm OK...
Comp USA was a nice store with tons of Electronics, but too over priced. Fry's is the same way...Most PC savy folks shop online now, at places like newegg, tigerdirect,etc.. with lower prices and no need to leave the house. Retail stores will need to compete with these venues to keep afloat.

Newegg may be cheaper but some of us can't wait - needs to be done today - or don't like to wait on shipping...

Re the 'Mexicans' comment....

The problem is that when there is no direct reference to a 'particular person from Mexico' [in this case] the presumption/inference is the generalization that this is an issue endemic with ALL Mexicans....and that's simply both not the case and thus somewhat discriminatory....;)

I HAVE to contradict Starkers. I don't work for Woolworths, never have. They are WAAY cheaper than Coles, and as for price increases every week, I've never seen it, but if they are there, then just remember Australia is in the middle of a drought, and has been for some years now. The other stores in Australia sell one product in each line, at least Woolies gives you choice. Aldi sucks. Coles is over-priced. Bi-Lo is out of business due to it's scummy appearance (Yellow and orange were AWFUL). IGA is more a corner store than a grocery store. I can't really see your point of view, but maybe you've had a bad experience with them.

Yes, I necroposted, but I couldn't let it drop... Woolworths is a good store...well, as good as a multi-billion dollar company gets... ;p
