Amazing Experiance

I didn't know where to put this since it doesn't have to do with either PC games or GalCiv but does have to do with science fiction, so I'll put it here.

This afternoon I had the chance to attend a lecture by none other then Orson Scott Card. My school had invited him, and he spoke for a little over an hour on various topics, using the first chapter of a upcoming book as his speaking notes (I believe the title is Marriage and Community). I must say, I was quite impressed.

His main focus was how society needs hero's, not only in literature but also in real life. He described these hero's as being the people willing to do or say the right thing when it needs to be done, regardless of the sacrifice it requires or the potentially negative results it might bring; and if a society is not willing to believe that somethings are so important (such as the society) that any sacrifice, including one's own life, is worth it's protection and preservation then they will inevitably be pushed aside by a society that does.

It was awesome!

Rubbish! no offence intended but untill we 'society' learns to stop sueing, no one is going to want to help anyone and rightly so.

If Superman was real, he would be bankrupted from getting sued all the time, that is the sad truth of our reality.

Even the good Samaritin from the bible would be breaking various mundane laws and be exposing himself to liability if he did what he did then in todays western world.

The moral of the story is - never help anyone until sueing gets the execution it has long deserved.

That makes me want to watch The Incredibles.

I fail to see how anything you said, even if completely accurate, makes his post "rubbish", as nothing you say contradicts it.

In fact, putting your two posts together, all you're saying is that American society is doomed by litigation.

Two posts? I never said I agreed with him, all I said is that his comment made me want to watch a movie.

Besides, it would be somewhat silly of me to be so excited about the lecture only to then agree with the declaration that it was rubbish.

Sorry, Feud, you hadn't posted when I was writing my response to Mystik!

No problem, classic case of message board misunderstanding!

I was just trying to create some 'atmosphere' to highlight the big pile of rubish (lawyers and liability laws) that stands in oposition to the spirit of the original post.
