When Art Imitates Life

Okay. So. Like almost 2 years ago, I made my first OD icon for the 'rare icon' thread in the forums. It was aimzz and Koasati that encouraged me to submit them for the gallery and off I went. A month later and some 30 icons, Alternate Setting requested an icon for 'Folding At Home'. I had no idea what it was, but I made them.

Then it began. Alternate Setting (Andy) starts emailing me. For over a freaking year he harrases and tasks me! No. Just kidding. Really. Andy actually shared the icons with the folks at Folding At Home, who really liked them. What began was a year and a half long wait as Andy kept me up to date on weather or not the people in charge there would make them the 'official' icons or use them in some fashion for the project. Andy would send me updates, email them for info, and through it all has been steadfast in seeing it through. Myself, I was just flattered and honored (especially after I found out what Folding At Home was about) that my amateurish work was being looked at for such a purpose.

So, this past week. It was made official. Andy emailed me a jpg of what they were doing with the icon they selected from the pack.

Now, not wanting to sound ungrateful, I asked him if there was perhaps a 'bigger' image they were using or had posted. Only because I wanted to write a little something here and pat my own back as it were, but mostly brag that not only was it being used, but it was being used by such a great site and group of people. So, Andy went back to the emails and in a day sent me this link.

Folding At Home

WOW! This was cool. And an honor. What is so 'ironic', if that is the right word, is that during the time since I made the icon and it was finally accepted, I have been through a lot. Too much. When Andy contacted me this past week, I was trying to figure out how to best approach handling what I had just found out was cancer as well as several pre-cancerous lesions. I didn't answer Andy right away when he first emailed me this past week. It was too wierd and kind of a slap in the face from 'fate' or whatever.

Anyway..I wanted to share my joy over this little 'acknowledgment' I received for my effort on the icons. AS much as I like all that I have made, this one I will always be proudest of. More than that, I wanted to thank Andy. He is the one who shared them with the folks at Folding At Home. He also has tried to keep my spirits up and I honestly believed was just dangling the prospect of this icon being accepted, just to goad me on sometimes. lol. His emails and updates, since February of 2006, always seem to come at just the right time.

Thanks, Andy.

No you don't. I had absolutely NOTHING to do with that. You made Quenn of the Mardi Gras all on your own!

I hate you!

You know you're more than welcome Po'dude.

I didn't have to sell them, just keep communications open. FAH have also given Po' a nice written credit on their 'About' page, in the Logo section. Professor Vijay Pande the Director of Folding at Home was keen from the moment he saw Po's icons and made it easy to keep up with the development of the new version.

FAH is going from strength to strength. Whether it's harnessing the power of the PlayStation market, or the refreshing of their whole site. Po's icon fitted right in and arrived at just the right time.

I know I said to Po' that I hoped this would be a small distraction from some of the less rosy stuff that's going on in his life. It's more than that of course, the energy & passion that Po' puts into his art doesn't create distractions, it is a part of his armoury and will I'm sure help you safely through this difficult time Po.

Congrats on the icons and be well soon.

Thank you everyone. Again, most of the credit goes to Andy for his perseverance..with me and FAH. If it were in my power, I would definitely nominate him for a promotion, not just for his assist on this, but because he is just very supportive overall to everyone and the community.

Cheers Po'.

I wasn't going to add any more because this thread should really be about you, but I better speak to this generous quote:-

I was fortunate that the promotion I already have, came when the site was a bit smaller. Back then they were also given for community support, it's hard to quantify that so I don't try. I wouldn't want or accept anything additional that wasn't connected directly to pushing the pixels around. I have my own personal challenges that slows that down, but I'll get there in the end. Not least because this forum and it's members on all strata, generates the desire to produce something that others can download.

Meanwhile, when you take a second to look at the sort of threads that I really enjoy. The dynamic/interactive stuff which creates a bit of a buzz on the forums. Threads that are all about involvement. such as the 'Rare Icon Request' thread, Zoomba's Winky thread and the occassional 'Community' suites. It becomes easy to see that's it's a pleasure to be able to support members like yourself that contribute on this level.

Watching the transition of your icon from the original thread, to it's place on the FAH board, was another really satisfying extension of that dynamic. The icon hasn't changed at all, just the way it's perceived - it's kinda cool that can happen and nice to be part of.

(Thanks to sidneysiders for the +1 - much appreciated - Erik you got a PM)
