WB6 reverts to Windows Classic

OK, just bought WB6 the other day. Great program but it started locking up when I was in an Explorer window. Sometimes there'd be a delay in the action I wanted or explorer would crash. When WB6 wasn't loaded I never noticed this behavior and haven't since turning WB off.

OS is XP SP2 with an ATI x300 (256mb dedicated) video card on a Dell 9300 laptop.

Here's what WB is telling me:

WindowBlinds version : WindowBlinds 6.0 (build 32 x86)

WindowBlinds is installed correctly on this PC
WindowBlinds appears to be activated on this PC
Your machine supports per pixel borders on WindowBlinds skins.

(Default Monitor) 1 is attached to ATI MOBILITY RADEON X300 (Omega 3.8.273)

Wblind.dll 2007/09/27 12:40:20
Wbsrv.dll 2007/09/23 10:10:43
Wbconfig.exe 2007/10/01 18:09:33
Wbload.exe 2007/09/27 16:42:44
Wbhelp.dll 2007/07/11 15:06:07
Wbui.dll 2007/09/22 13:13:06
Tray.dll 2007/09/12 18:52:21
Screen.exe 2007/09/30 15:18:24

It doesn't seem to happen with any particular app other than Explorer or IE7. Drop-down menus seem to work fine, but when I click the toolbar or try to open another (or first) explorer window it will either hiccup or crash. With that, here's what log.txt has to say abour explorer.exe:

Well, I figured I'd try something and it's made the matter worse. I installed Stardock Central and it found that WB had an update (6.00.005). I updated that and installed Theme Manager (2.50c.046) as well. Now whenever I apply a skin from either WB or TM it reverts to Windows Classic.

I've seen a few similar threads like this, but with no real solution yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes when I updated ThemeManager and tried loading a WB from it, The skin would revert to classic. Assuming that SDC made you reboot after the WB Update, but a second reboot would fix my problem. I have XP Home SP2.

Newest WB is 6.00[b].099

Hmm, it didn't ask me to reboot. I'll try that once I'm able to. SDC didn't give me that version # when I ran it again, but then again it could be that it didn't because I didn't reboot. Will post back here once I've done this. Thanks elvee.

OK, I rebooted and WB automatically opened. I tried applying the Aerial and Acrylic skins and they both reverted to Windows Classic. I opened TM and it hung for about 30 seconds on the Visual Styles screen. It then came up and I tried applying a different skin, this time it worked. I then opened WB and tried the Acrylic and Aerial skins again, this type they worked.

I then tested some functions (searching, right-clicking, etc...) within Explorer and they reacted a whole lot faster than before. So, it appears to be working. Oh, and the version you listed is a beta, which is why it didn't show before as I don't have that option checked.

I'll post back here tomorrow with another report as I won't be on the PC much until tomorrow morning.

I've got the same problem once applying changes after any skin selection... After 30 seconds waiting it reverts to Windows classic theme, with differents coloured bars depending on which style I selected. I used trial version of WB 6 and also WB 5.51 with the same results. Before I used WB 5 without any problem ? Please help... Could it be possible these problemes are coming since I use a dualcore processor ?

The processor is not a concern. I am using a dual core processor here and have had no problems using WB.

Could you post your WB System Info?

I haven't had any problems today. Last night I transfered pics from my SD card to my laptop (someone wrecked and rolled into our front yard   ) using the transfer wizard. This always locked up before. This time it was as smooth as butt-ah. Guess this ends my involvement in this thread.

Well, all isn't well, although this is the only problem I've had today. When trying to open an mht file from my documents folder explorer crashed. When trying to apply the classic style it didn't paint the taskbar like it should.

Sorry to hear about the problems. Hopefully they did not ruin your lawn!

Could you post your WB System Info?

Just open the WBConfig dialog and it's one of the main sections along the top. There is also a button (once you're in there) at the very top right to have it copy all of the information to the clipboard, so that you may then paste this into the reply form here.

Naw, not much of a lawn at this moment. Texas doesn't have good grass weather. Just some ruts and gouges.

I did that info in the first post, but here it is again.

I am having the same problem after having installed WB6 via Stardock Central, here is my system info:

What irritates me is the "Radmin Mirror Driver V3" entry and the version number, Stardock Central shows V6.00b.099

Previous WB version 5.x ran without any problems...any help appreciated

jpn80: My apologies.. I am unsure how I overlooked your first post.

Did you want to try out the latest Beta through Stardock Central? This may work better for you with regards to the taskbar skinning issue you reported.

Alec Tronic: Did you have a version of WindowBlinds installed previously? It looks like there are some files from WB5 still resident on your system. Try uninstalling, restarting your computer and then reinstalling the latest version ( preferably through Stardock Central).

@milksama: I have tried this already, the problem was that they were files left in the program files dir - after having deleted them manually before re-installing WB6 it works now.

I'm willing to try. Seems like uninstalling and then reinstalling gets things working again. Just an update on what I've done so far. I've updated to the latest Omega drivers and I'm getting the same explorer hangs. I've looked for the last ATI Catalyst drivers that actually supported the x300 mobility card, but haven't had any luck yet. Dell's last driver update was 2005, and I certainly don't want to go that far back in driver history. I'll uninstall everything, then reinstall, and then will report back here.

OK, I uninstalled WB, TM, and SC. I then deleted any left behind files in Program Files. Reboot. Installed SC; reboot. Installed WB; reboot. Installed TM; reboot. Everything seemed to be working just fine until explorer locked up again about 20 minutes ago. This time it was the taskbar, nothing worked. I could Alt+Tab between windows and any open explorer window seemed to work fine. WB version is currently 6.00.005. I'll update to the current beta although I really don't like running beta software.

I must say that this is getting frustrating. The only reason I'm sticking with this is because I paid for this software. A hacked dll and "regular" styles never gave me any problems. WindowBlinds is much nicer, but obviously still flakey.

Ichineur -

The shareware version expires 60 days after the original installation - uninstalling/re-installing will not reset the clock. Sounds like you are outside the 60-day window.

Hey Nickracer you should probably start your own new thread, this one is old. You will get more easily noticed that way and will get assistance more quickly.
