question about planet textures

Ok I know that class 1+ planets are puzzled together from pieces to look unique everytime. my question is, can more texture pieces be added to the pool that the game uses to make these unique class 1+ planets? If so, how? I have tons of nice looking planet textures and would like to add them so that they are used when the game generates the unique class 1+ planets.

They aren't 'puzzled together', they're just random greyscale fractals (something like what you'd get from the clouds filter in photoshop). If you don't use the heightmaps, then the game makes different ones every time you play (if you do, it picks from the large but finite set of heightmaps).

About the only useful degree of customization lies in setting specific textures to the racial starting systems in customplanets, and changing the set used on class 0 planets.

how do you get the .raw files for the raw terrains? I've tried saving the bumped texture as a .raw file using photoshop and placing it in the heightmaps folder. When I look at the planet terrain to place structures, i see a weird mish mosh of criss crossing lines. What am i doing wrong here?

It should be 256-shade greyscale, 384x192 in size. Save it with those settings and it should work.
