System Resources

Hows the Performance

I am considering buying Object Desktop for my computer but want to wait for version 6 of Windows Blinds to be released. How is it on system resources? I have a 2.4 gigahertz Core 2 Duo processor, 512 ATI Radeon Video card, 2 gigs Ram memory. I use a lot of graphics and 3D applications and don't want anything that will slow my system down. I am using XP Home Edition as my OS. I will probably upgrade to 3 gigs of Ram in the future--not sure if that will help performance and not use a lot of the visual effects and animations to conserve system resources.

You shouldn't have any problem at all with those specs.

THe only time my resources go up is when I first apply a skin and maybe if the skin has LOTS of animation.  And at that point, I am aware that I am trading CPU cycles and memory for cool.  I'm cool with that.

To give you a baseline:

Right now it's on a 2.8mhz Northwood, old ATI 9600XT 128meg with intentionally outdated drivers, 2 gig of ram. I'm running Desktop X with a LOT of unanimated images loaded, and the WindowBlinds 6 beta. Also running all of the typical user overhead (including a pig of a security program) with no real attempt on my part to thin it out, and of course I'm online.

With Task Manager open my CPU usage is fluctuating from 1 to 3%. Even when I have no Stardock software loaded, it'll fluctuate from 1 to 3%.

Don't run much 3D s/w, really can't comment. I do run video rendering software and video playback software with WB and DTX loaded and it's not a problem.

Ya there is a slight increase in load time, but even on my machine we're talking in seconds, and that's with DTX having to load a lot of images.

I'm sure part of it all would depend on how many features of Object Desktop a person loads and how much or what a person chooses to load. The beauty of the package though is that you get to choose those things. You could always do a trial of WindowBlinds (do they still have that?), see if you think it bothers you and go from there. I'd sure think you'd not be bothered by the overhead on that machine though.

Doh. My cpu is usually around 30% (wb6, avedesk+sysstats, winamp, objectdock+, cursorxp, iconpackager, skype, live messenger, etc). >_<

If I'm playing anything in WinAmp, regardless of Stardock, it'll usually tack on a fair amount of CPU usage, say 10-30% depending on what I'm playing. That it?

Most likely. I think the Avedesk+Sysstats combo chews up a bit too.
