So about the current Star Trek mod conflict

The first thing I would like to say is everyone who has worked on this mod, wonderful job. I stopped playing GalCiv awhile ago and this was the one thing that brought me back to it. That being said, I have my first and only gripe. I've been waiting almost forever, and it's done, but it isn't being released. Now that really bums me out, I understand there is a memory leak, everyone understands that there is a memory leak. But it seems like there are ways around it, hell, even if there aren't I still want it. I would rather be able to at least play some of it, then not play it at all. It seems like many in the community agree with me too. The only reason I've made this post, and the only reason I even decided to speak up is this. I understand that the mod team has their reservations about releasing their product. However, I think we have all waited, and had time to look at the issues at hand. We as a community should be able to decide for ourselves whether or not we want it and want to deal with the problems. All I ask is that you put it out there, if people don't want it, they won't take it. It's almost a crime to hold something back this good from people who are willing to accept it.

If you agree with me, please, add to this post.

Well, I agree that it'd be a shame to never release it, but their work is their work. The best made mods are never released.

And, the memory leak problem gets very severe the more models you add. I only have the older version of the ST mod, but I've made several custom races. One for each of the Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, and some completely custom factions. Running those, and especially if running the Hi-Res mod, my game will last 12 turns (the 2nd autosave) before going to video game hell. I don't have the new ST mod (just the 2 beta's released awhile ago), but I'd imagine somewhat similar results. This game, with hi-res mods, runs worse than Supreme Commander or Oblivion w/ maxed settings and graphics mods.... It's a shame really.

It's insanely frustrating, and I can nearly guarantee you won't play it. You'll start it up, look at the neat stuff, cheat so you can see all of the ships, and then forget about it until the memory leak is fixed.

I've been waiting for that for a long while, I'm hoping with 1.7 or 2.0, because I won't be buying the new expansion until it is. The main game works okay for me, but it adds so much more if I can add my own races, and play my custom game, and trying to play vanilla isn't nearly as fun anymore.

They made the mod for free, and they don't owe you anything. If/When they want to release it, they will, but demanding it is very poor taste. Free Work + Time + Love = Modding. A polite PM might get you farther than a barn burning post. When people demand people release a mod, I can't help but think of that idiotic MTV show where a rich 16 year old girl cusses her parents out because she got a blue brand new car instead of a red one.

I'm sure many people can't wait for this mod, but demanding that you decide for yourself, while not having contributed at all, is not fair and incredibly rude to those who've put so much time and effort into this. That, to me, is what's almost criminal.

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait.

I apologize that it came off sounding at all harsh, I really didn't intend for it to, and I'm not sure where I sound so demanding. O well, anyways I agree that it is their work, and they have the full rights to do what they want with it, no arguments there. I'm just saying throw out an "Official Beta" or somethin'.

I must have misunderstood this memory leak thing too, because as far as I know, I have the latest release of the mod and I can play an entire game on gigantic. The only thing I can't do is have fleet battles on because any fleet battles crash the game. So again, I've never experienced this 10 turns and its over thing (though that would be a bummer). I just wanted to make this clear for who's reading. I'm not demanding anything, I even said, "all I ask." Anyway, my goal was for people who really wanted to see this come out to say something about it so we could get a few voices for those of us who really support these guys. I think it says a lot that there are people out here who want something that's supposedly guaranteed not to work. I apologize if I've offended anyone, that wasn't my intent.

One last thing, I would have posted something like this or pm'd someone on the team's own site, but I haven't been added to the forum. I'm pretty sure I applied about 3 months ago . Anyway these guys are busy so it isn't a big deal, but that's why the post is here and not there.

I do have a question though; is Stardock still not acknowledging that there's a problem?

Hi everyone I just wanted to say thanks for the posts, which I'm sure Han, Ren and Spax appreaciate them as well--so again I wanted to say thank you. I apologize if we haven't answered everyones posts about what we've been up to with the Star Trek mod. We came to a decision not to release the mod until stardock fixed the memory leak issue which would render the game unplayable to most players---I know Han has been speaking with Cari via email about the memory leak issue so lets all cross our fingers and hope there is a fix soon. We are still working on the mod in the meantime--and to tell you all the truth it would be a cold day in hell before we give up on it---we are star trek fans as well as all of you, and also fans of Galactic Civilizations 2!!!   --I for one don't believe that stardock has given up on the memory leak issue---look how many patches they have released as well as their amazing support on this website--I have never seen such devotion to a game from the actual devolopers---I know their game is their baby too. Oh one more thing---Turn off Autosave while playing the mod!!!!
