The Novalith Cannon

Awesome!

Just a little something I found.

I just received my latest issue of PC Gamer Magazine, and inside, it has a preview of SOASE.

It talked about the "Novalith Cannon", which is a TEC superweapon capable of striking planets anywhere within a solar system, to devastating effects. A planetary shield can hold out against it, but only for a short period of time.

excerpt:

"I built a pair of these 'fully armed and operational' battle stations when I established a beachhead in a new solar system, and quickly brought a local empire to its knees by destroying several key colonies ahead of my invasion fleet. Suddenly, every empire offered a cease-fire agreement at once!"

New member (in the last 5 days) who posts something quite out of line with everything else we've heard, and produces no link. Methinks "hoax".

I deleted the newsleter, but I remember something similier to what he said. The weapon can only strike within 2 phase-lines of the structure, and the effects take awhile to take effect, but it's legit.

YES!

Just got my issue of PC Gamer, and from the pictures of the Novalith Cannon, it looks like it is used to bombard the enemies planets, not completely destroy them.

I meant destroy as in eliminate colonies, not as in Death Star.

Also, I have been participating since Beta 1, I just have never had reason to post before now.

working under the assumption that this is true:

for godsake, do not pull a C&C on us, at least make most of the superweapons be mobile, HUGE, units. its never fun to have to take out 3 or so planets in a rush because you're being sniped.

also: there has to be some way to effeciently counter this, otherwise it will be a pain in the _____ (noun). me thinks the best way being that it creates a temporary "phasespace burn-tunnel" allowing your units to back up right to where its firing from, otherwise you could simply use phase interdictors to stop attacking enemies (or at least delay them to the point where you've already killed their planet).

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

It looks like planetary shields will be able to help reduce the damage the cannon does to the plaent.

For modding purposes, I do hope we'll be able to create planet (or even star) destroying weapons.

i hope there isnt a super wep i agree with schem

This explains the planetary shield mechanic change.

It would be VERY nice to create a usable planet out of dead asteroid planets. those things annoy me, useless planets only good for a minor outpost.

Agree. This cannon would make planetary shields useful as a defense options. Currently they're waste of money since they're so easily destroyed, but against a long range attack they would be quite nice.
