How can it be? Certainly AI doesn't cheat :-)

Ok, what am I doing wrong. I play normal difficulty, large to huge maps. I usually have nine opponents set to random. I've been playing the Krynn. I maxxed out miniaturization, have built a hyperion shrinker, maxxed out hulls and maxxed out mass drivers. I cannot physically build a ship that will half kill a single Thalan ship that has close to 500 armor, and 700-800 in mass driver attack. This is a single Thalan ship, not a fleet I'm looking at. I'm missing something here....been only playing for a month, read TFM, game guides, this forum etc. IOW, a NUBE. I do build military starbases and try to project out as far as I can.

thanks guys!

Your problem is your fighting armor with mass drivers. Armor is the anti-mass driver of defenses. Try switching your ships to using beam or missle weapons, and try to use shields if the thalans are using beams, point defense if they are using missles, and you will find you beat them everytime, at least until they start placing defenses on their ships to counter your weapons, then you have to switch again.

I think the point he is making is trying to make is why can't he build ships like that of the AI. What you describe is not uncommon when playing on suicide against ultimate AIs which have huge bonuses including miniaturization or if the ships are receiving boosts from military galactic resources. Since you have the AIs set to random, check and see what the Thalans are set to.

Rather than taking on the AIs superior ships, attack its economy. Take out its starbases which are poorly defended and capture its planets (you only need to destroy the planetary defenders not his fleets). Take out its transports trying to take back the planets; if they are protected by strong fleets you can't combat then destroy the colony before the AI reclaims it. With high soldering you may be able to hold it against one or more invasions.

You lack Military Resource Mining bases. Explore Thalan territory for any mining bases with red colors, those are the military ones. Fully equipped, these will boost all ships' weapons and defenses by 40%, and they likely have 3 to 5, doubling or even tripling their ships' firepower. Take these bases out and all their ships will decrease in firepower; you will notice that their military rating drops significantly even though you havent destroyed a single ship, but they are all weakened. If possible, turn it around, and take the starbases for your own. Also, every little bit helps. Check them for the trade goods Xinanthium Hull Plating and Micro Repair Bots. If they don't have it, find out who does, and try and get them for yourself.

The difficulty is Normal, the opponents I always set to random. I only have one (had) military starbases upgraded. Man, I didn't know they could make that much difference. I was monitoring Thalan ships to check weaponry when I researched defenses. This is a tough game, but extremely fun. It's a long way from Leisure Suit Larry . Waiting on Disciples III too, btw

thanks guys.

P.S. Have you been playing too long when you start getting mad at your opponents and taking it personal like? You know, wasting a colony just so they won't get it? LOL
