Well, what do people think?

The premise for this game sounds rather interesting: big scale, slower paced, epic - RTS and 'turn based philosophy' blend. I am a big Galciv and RTS fan, so in principle it sounds like this game should be right up my alley.

The question is - before I plonk down $44 - what are everybody's impressions so far? I'd like to make an informed decision before I commit.

Thanks

Beta or not, I'm enjoying it. Its gotten bogged-down at the end-game, but I chose a larger map (and my playstyle is slow, build up massive fleets) so thats to be expected.

Not seeing as much use of my second computer core as I expected though, given that I read this was a multi-thread game.

I'm a dev, so of course I'm going to tell you Sins rocks and you should definately give it a shot even in beta. Typically, the official forums of any game would be viewed by outsiders as fan boy biased so I'll even provide links to outside opinions.

Both positive and negative comments can be found throughout the official forums but you can check out this thread https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/?forumid=440&aid=155866#1259294 for a few consolidated positive views though most are buried in full posts identifying good elements of Sins and constructive criticism on things people didn't like, suggestions for changes and just cool ideas. Check out any other beta-feedback thread for a sampling of the negative views.

Here are some other sources with a bit of beta 2 feedback and there are many more in my bookmark list which I'm sure you can google around to find. I wouldn't recommend reading some of the longer ones from the start as they are quite old so if it looks like they have more than 10 pages, just skip to the last 10 pages to get up-to-date opinions.

nj@phrasing

but seriously, this is a great game, especially considering that its not coming out for 219 days. (And to answer the question I'm sure you're asking yourself: Yes, they WILL continue to update/work on it FOREVER! or until yarlen wears his fingers down to the point that he cant type anymore.

Ive been around for like.. forever hehe, and i really like the game. The game is beta and that will ofcourse have some bugs here and there, but its the most stable beta i ever tryed, and some are even saying the beta is running better then some released games

If you wish to see the game in action, you should try and watch some of the gameplay videos, they might show more then words at times

Well, I can't say much more than I agree with all above posters.

"I am a big Galciv and RTS fan, so in principle it sounds like this game should be right up my alley."

This is me in a nutshell
so the premises for you liking this game as well are good.

Hmm... I say spend $1 less on meals for 44 days. After 44 days, if you don't like the game (impossible IMO, this is a game perfect for you based on what you've said), then you won't be wasting a penny.

I signed up to beta test beta 2, didn't do the first one, but 2 is utter awesome, and will continue to grow, the devs listen to peoples feedback and suggestions, and we have had 1 patch and 2 hotfixes, all three came out within a short space of time from each other, and the patch has incorporated quite a few people's ideas, and there will be another patch coming out but will take a while, the AI needs a lot of work doing to it, but with so many days before the final release, Im sure it will be fine tunned a plenty by then, as will MP, overall this is a most stable beta, I haven't had any realy issues with the game, so it will be exciting to see this through to the end, so if you want to pitch in, I think you won't be dissapointed

Thanks folks for all who replied. I'll take a look at the gameplay vids as suggested, but I think you guys have pushed me past the point of no return with your silky smooth PR skills...

I was going to suggest the InGame-videos, they are really great.

I've been visiting the SoaSE forums for quite a while now but I still didn't preorder it. I mostly didn't because Ironclad is always looking like they are going to simplify the gameplay.
It's basically what happened to GalCiv. Instead of modeling the real basics of economy the system is "simplified" and suddenly I have to read up complete threads on the new "easy" system just to get an understanding of what is going on, instead of just doing it intuitively right like I would if it worked like it should. As far as I can see SoaSE skips economy (almost) completely, so that doesn't apply here, but then again someone thought that "fleet-points" are a good idea. I understand that real armies can't be unlimited in size due to the financial and effectivity restrictions the high numbers bring with them, but I never heard of any government declaring that they'll stop aquiring naval vessels because they ran out of fleet points.

Well, that's my take on the game. I hope Ironclad does the right thing so I can some day hit the buy-button and recieve the best game of all times.
