LotR, for sure. Starwars, sure. Matrix is cool, I like "Navras". Mad World (in Donnie Darko). There are many others, but I can't think of any right now.

LOTR, Starwars, and Pirates of the Carribean is also great.

For classic scores, I tend to favor Bernard Herrmann--

Day the Earth Stood Still
North by Northwest
Psycho
Jason and the Argonauts
Taxi Driver

John Williams' Superman theme was the first that came to mind for contemporary composers, as well as Danny Elfman's Batman theme.

Not sure they are the best, but the most widely known theme songs gotta be
Star Wars, Star Trek and Indiana Jones ^^

No particular order, but offhand:

1) Star Wars
2) Indiana Jones
3) El Cid (Charlton Heston/Sophia Loren)
4) LoTR
5) Lawrence of Arabia

There are a few others. Williams' music really was head and shoulders above the rest for a while, including E.T., Close Encounters, and Jaws. However, I love the music of some of the mighty epics, such as Ben-Hur. El Cid is really spectacular IMO.

How about original game music?

My first 3 would be:

1) Dune II
2) Final Fantasy VII
3) Dune I

In this case, they are in order. I thought the music throughout the game of Dune II (the first RTS game), nothing short of fantastic.

Star Wars for sure, but I like the Imperial March better than the main theme title track.

Braveheart bagpipes are pretty sweet. I dont know if thats a "theme song".

And I love the James Bond song, the main one, not the individual ones made for each movie. Along that line, the opening song for Mission Impossible rocks.

In no particular order:
Super Mario
Gianna Sisters
Zelda
Tetris
many many more

Basically all the old games had great tunes.

I agree with a lot of the ones that have already been mentioned, namely LoTR, Star Wars, Pulp Fiction, & Jaws. I'll also add Fight Club. Although, that could partially be because the music makes me think of the corresponding scenes in the movie, which I've re-watched many many times. When it was at the $2 movie theatre, my friend and I saw it three times.

I forgot one-- Max Steiner's score for the original King Kong (1933). Steiner was one of the first to develop individual themes or leitmotifs for the characters. The opening three notes of the main title are from Kong's theme, which echoes throughout the entire film.

How could we all forget the Godfather. That is some great theme music
