The_Fifth_Rider The_Fifth_Rider

"Failed to initialize COM."

"Failed to initialize COM."

game doesn't even start

i installed beta 2, fired it up, or tried to, and i get "Failed to initialize COM" error. i select either "skip" or "skip all" and the screen goes black for a few seconds then returns to the desktop.

that's it.

my system is more than capable of running this game, and the software is all up-to-date.

i'm a bit put-off that i paid $50 for this. i understand it's a beta, but that's why betas usually don't *cost* anything.

sooooooooo........

not fixed.

after downloading the 75.17 patch... same error. i tried uninstalling *everything* i could find, and re-installing...no change.

/sadface

haven't had much time to look at it...having to do a 45-minute download each time i install really drags the troubleshooting out. mostly i've had other stuff occupying my time, but tonight and tomorrow i will have a bunch of time to keep hacking away at it. not really sure how to proceed, though... i need some kind of debugging/process trace tool(s) to pinpoint what is being called that is causing the error.

anyway, now it's personal, and i am determined to figure it out. i can take breaks periodically and boot into Vista and play, at least.

i'll post more info if and when i have some.

Theres a 0.76.018 hotfix, but i dont think it will help on your xp problem

This COM problem is Windows related... By chance do you have room on your System to install XP again? And make a dual boot, then try running sins on that.

so, after a loong break due to RL concerns, i have been putting time into SSE again. i managed to get it to run under XP for awhile, after doing a repair installation of Windows. from what i can determine, it seems to be a problem related to DirectX, and though i'm not really certain what part, i think it's DirectSound, judging from searches i've been doing.

anyway, the repair allowed it to run a few times, but it's happening again. since reinstalling DX is not really possible short of another repair, i am hoping to figure it out again.

i can do a dual-boot XP install, or i can install it on one of my other XP boxes.

i will post an email to the address there for an exe, if you still have one available for 0.78.

also, it says something about "deleting the file C and re-activating." i'm not sure what the "file C" is...

... ./smacks himself

Must learn to pay attention to dates. I really must. That way I wouldn't get my hopes up over "patch tomorrow!" from devs.

I hate you devs

Greetings from the land of smiles.

I have the same probleme as the thread opener, and in addition to that when I try to download the patch 1.05, I end up on a screen telling me that the download requested is not available.

Anybody can help?

Warm and sunny salutations.
