help me with my corrupted files

OS Windows

I used a disk recovery tool to recover some previously formatted files, however I am having problems with the .doc files [MS Word]. I use MS OFFICE 2003 and below is the message on the screen when I tried to open the recovered word documents:
"Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try this suggestion - blah blah blah...."
I tried the suggestions but still couldn't open the document. I tried opening with Notepad but all I got was some funny machine language. Any help please! The files are so important.

I use OpenOffice a free opensource replacement for MS Office
OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute

When installing you can set up the options to open .doc files. Of course if they are too corrupted even OpenOffice may not work.

When I get problems such as this I spend minutes/hours/days/whatever Googling such words as 'doc file' and 'corrupted' in a 'search within'....almost always there's someone else with an identical issue...and a posted solution....

I would try this here and see if it works? I've heard it does. But have never had to use it myself...

I guess the real question is "Are the documetns corrupted or is Word corrupted?"

Have you done a Word repair (under the Help menu of Word 2003 and XP)?  Have you tried to open the fiels witha  different Office app?  Word on a different PC?  Wordpad?  Notepad?  Google Docs and Spreadsheets?
