Vista Ultimte wont play mpg on desktop

Keeping me from buying the deskscape premire desktops

I use Vista ultimate, but it wont play mpg on the desktop, as a result I can't run a majority of the awsome dream files out there, including the one shipped with DreamScenes. I can play mpg's in media player or in media center, I just cant use them as desktops. MY assumption is it is just a file association problem but I cant find it. HELP I want run all those awsome premium desktops!!!!!
