Ridiculously slow server connection

Downloads take forever

Hi, everybody.

I am a user from Germany and just bought ObjectDesktop online yesterday. Since then I am trying to install the software via Stardock Central, but it takes forever. The connection speed ist well below 10kb/sec for about 80% of the time, though I have a fast DSL connection with 6 MB Download and 512 KB Upload Speed. For example: WindowsBlinds5 took 72 minutes to install - that really su....!

As almost all other sites download much faster (US sites, too), I wonder, if this is a Stardock "Europe only" Problem. According to my tracing with NeoTracePro there is a major decrease of connection speed starting with the SprintLink Gateway near Washington,DC. From there on, Ping times on all nodes are above 400, reaching max values of up to 800. I can provide a report to proove this if needed. For a company, which relies mainly on ESD (electronic software distribution), such values are totally unacceptable in my opinion. Though I had the PC running all night through, I still have installed less than half of the applications after now nearly 20 hours and I am really annoyed now.

When I purchased my first stardock product GalCiv 2 a few month ago, I already recognized a low download speed (between 15 an 20 kb/sec), but since then it has become much worse.

I also purchased a few premium suites, including the "Omega Premium Suite", which is about 36 MB to download. Since yesterday, I have tried to download this suite more than 20 times without success. After trying to use IE7 and Firefox without succeeding, I installed GetRight to download it, but as the Stardock Server does not support resuming, the download starts over and over again and everytime stops at 18,78 MB saying "Server busy, waiting to retry" (or so, I have the German version). There has to be a technical problem with the file or with the server timeouts I assume.

As I have paid money for the product I would like to be able to use it, too. Though I basically like and support the way Stardock delivers its products and the corresponding updates, this new experience is very disappointing. I would expect a reliable and fast download, so I can instantly use the software, and I also would expect support for all major download managers, which includes a server that SUPPORTS RESUMING!

Does anybody have a solution to these problems? What are your experiences with the connection speed?

Greetings

Will

Ctrl M will add line breaks.  It's a known issue with some users and hopefully will be fixed in a future build.

Try this for now to improve your download speeds, in Stardock Central (SDC), go to Tools, Settings, Internet, Available Servers and choose the one that's not selected.  That my improve your download rate.  I have also seen success on the forums with Leechget.  I don't know how it's different than getright but I've heard it works.

I'm sorry that the downloads are timing out for you.  If the problem is a Sprint Gateway in D.C. it's a little out of Stardock control.  Hopefully switching servers will help.

@Zubaz

I switched the server and it makes a slight difference, I now have mainly around 11 to 15 kb/sc. I still consider that much too slow for ESD.

It appears to be aproblem in the Cogent network, not with the SprintLink Gateway (this is up to speed again). All nodes with "...atlas.cogento..." have response times above 350 ms. The Stardock Server itself (dl.stardock.com) has a response time of 350 to 480 ms    Also the routing changes drastically in frequent periods. For a major customer like Stardock, your ISP should have alternate routing plans to cover problems like that. You should complain about that.

(OFF TOPIC)@vStyler: Very few servers support such speed, but I can reach about 90% in professional torrent networks and on VPNs. Next month I hope to get the new Telekom Flatrate Package with 16000 Downstream/ 1024 Upstream for 63.95 EUR/month incl. unlimited free domestic phone calls (ISDN, not VoIP). I have to admit, that I really love the communications infrastructure in Germany, it's pretty high performant. I always miss that, when I'm working overseas.

I got the Omega Premium Suite downloaded in the meantime, but it took me 2 days of broken-up connections. Interestingly the filesize was reported as 36 MB, but the real filesize after the download was only 18.78 MB (exactly the value where the connection always broke up). So this was either a specific problem with the file or indeed a compatibility issue of GetRight. I will check out LeechGet, but I rarely need Downloadmanagers, most downloads are only a matter of a few minutes and can be done with a browser.

Meanwhile the network infrastructure seems to be back to normal, I get pretty fast connections now (110 kb to 170 kb/sec with StardockCentral) and have installed all programs now. So I apologize for blaming the Stardock Server, too. It was obviously an infrastructure problem.

wincustomize.com ist still pretty slow (below 10 kb/sec on Downloads, extremely slow browsing), but I'm used to that. I never experienced it faster

You and everyone else... *sigh* I also have 6MBit cable.
