Is there a way to import your own alien portraits to use in the game?

Yep. If the pic is 256x256, and in .png format, you can put them in My Documents -> My Games -> GalCiv2(this is for DL)/ GC2DarkAvatar(Obviously for DA) -> Gfx -> Portraits.
