'tis weird, truly

I am faced with a mind gobbling situation    A couple of days ago, the amount of sace in my primary partition was about 20 GB. And i just noticed that it is 11.2 GB now. Being somewhat of a power user (geek kid - and Harry Potter freak), it made me go "CODSWALLAP!" Anyway, i'm confused, i like to know what's using up the space, etc, you know. I removed the temp. internet files (as if they were gna free 8 GB ) and also removed all but the most recent restore points. The numbers sit at a proud 11.6 GB now.
I don't remember installing anything. My system is set to hibernate but that's only supposed to take about 300 MB ONCE. and it can't just randomly consume 8 GB in 2 days when it's following the same routine for ages.
So: Any ideas, theories, formulations, thoughts, suggestions, queries, something, ANYTHING?
And I'll keep on my hunt for massively big files!

Thanks!

btw, ignore the cheesiness, just finished annual exams

For this type of thing I like diskmaps and my favorite (for looks anyway) is sequoiaview
If you are an older ODNT subscriber (meaning you have been a subscriber for a while, not that you are old) you should be able to grab DriveScan.  It does good work but is ugly.

get CCleaner (it's free) and run it.

Drivescan from Stardock is the perfect way to sleuth down those huge files.

Its just ugly

@ Zubaz:I'll check out sequioiaview, thanks. and no, i'm not really an old OD subscriber

@ 511b: nope, besides even if i had, i deleted the temporary files (internet and system) so the burn temp files should've gone.

@ Bichure: i know about CCleaner. Used to use it but i manually deleted all the "Crap" (using built in Acer Empowering Tools.) And i can't really imagine how can acquire 8 GB of 'crap' in (probably) less than 2 days. Unless, of course, my brother was upto something (but i'm the only admin on my lappy! woot! )

@ vStyle: I have no idea what you mean!

I'm not really.. concerned, just curious, y'know (and have more free time than is good for me. Still, i'm thinking of ways this might've happened so i can add to my extensive library of PC related knowledge. *ahem ahem*

Sometimes programs encounter errors and make huge log files. I have a backup program that couldn't find one of the folders I designated and ended up generating a 12GB log file that was completely unnecessary.

WindDirStat is another of those hard drive viewer thingies. I've never been able to get DriveScan to show up in SDC. WWW Link

That's a good point, Adamness, I've had a couple of games encounter errors and crash a few times. This might be what has happened. I'll try the viewer thingy tool. Not sure how it works but i'll figure it out once my bro gets off my lappy
Thanks!

Now if I only knew who/what Billy Ocean was...

I used to think that love was just a fairy tale

Until that first hello
until that first smile.
But if I had to do it all again I wouldn't change a thing
'Cause this love is everlasting.

Suddenly - life has new meaning to me.
There's beauty up above and things we never take notice of

You wake up and suddenly you're in love.

Girl
you're everything a man could want and more.
One thousand words are not enough to say what I feel inside.
Holding hands as we walk along the shore

Never felt like this before
now you're all I'm living for.
Suddenly - life has new meaning to me. . . .

Each day I pray this love affair would last forever.
Suddenly - life has new meaning to me. . . .
There's beauty up above and things we never take notice of

You wake up and suddenly you're in love.

You wake up and suddenly you're in love.

Great...now you have Fuzzy singing cheesy songs...

BTW, you may also want to do a full system scans.  Worms will replicate and fill your drive, too.

There's now 13.3 GB in the drive! Which of course is totally weird as I don't remember doing anything after my initial attempts that may have increased the capacity (although i'll have to ask my bro if he did something, highly unlikely since he's a limited user).

Started a scan. Thanks for the tip. But even if a worm had replicated the files, they wouldn't be invisible, right? coz I checked in the drive and there aren't any odd looking files or files that look like they might be dupes. Or they might be in the system folder
well, i'll see what the scan shows and I think I'll have a go at the harddrive viewers after dinner (it's 8:05 here )

Thanks for the response people, this is my first thread that has had over 10 replies (out of 3) (although admittedly half of them are by me )

oh and @ Fuzzy: Should I be happy that you're just writing songs and not singing them here?

I didn't write it, but Billy Ocean sang it. And no, I don't sing (it's raining enough already)...

hmm. interesting developments. I ran sequoiaview and deleted a few old files i though were unneccassory. Have 14.6 GB in the primary partition right now although when i see the size of everything in C://, it's 38.0 GB. which if take away from 53.6 GB (total size) should leave 15.6 GB remaining. That is one GB more than what, apparently, there is left =/ Or the numbers might just be inaccurate.
Anyway, I ran sequoiaview, no odd looking huge files (apart from one I deleted of ~ 1GB) but I was wondering whether the system files pagefile.sys is supposed to 1.5 GB and hiberfil.sys supposed to be 0.998 GB. I think it's highly unlikely but, ofcourse, can't delete them. They're in the root drive. no floders.
oh and the hidden folder MSOCache was quite big too (~ 2 GB)
Any ideas?

EDIT: Scan was clean. No infections found
