Screen corruption and total lockup

Dread Lords build 1.50.127

I would submit a SmartException crash report, but I don't know that it can catch it if the whole computer crashes too. I'm currently running the Dread Lords version 1.50.127; no expansion pack yet. Basically what occurs is this:

I've been playing through the campaign, having not finished it the first time and reformatted, and every thirty to forty-five minutes the screen becomes corrupted. All sorts of bizarre colored blocks, usually a bit of fuscia, red, and yellow, dot the screen every ~48 square pixels. There is also a bit of "scanline-black-smear" every so often. A few seconds later the entire PC freezes and requires a cold boot.

Not fun.

Anyway, my graphics card isn't getting hot, and neither are my other system components. I don't know what's causing this, but it wasn't happening until this update. (No active mods.)

System:
Windows XP Home, SP2 (latest updates).
AMD 64 X2 4800
Geforce 7900GS
2GB G.SKILL PC800 RAM
120GB WD SATA

(And to the folks who remember me... yes, I'm back to lurking again. )

Anything in the Event Log under Control Panel->Admin Tools coinciding with the time of the issue?

IIRC a couple of people have experienced similar issues in the past, and it always turned out to be a hardware issue of some sort. Still, might as well post your debug.err just to be sure there aren't any hints in there.

Unless this counts, I'm not so sure that it is relevant.

And oddly enough, I ran it again with SmartExcept running and the thing didn't crash. And I played for almost 2.5 hours at that. It could, on rather remote chance, be a problem with the graphics card overheating due to summer, but we've got the A/C on so it is remote.

If I have a crash with SmartExcept running I'll post my debug.err for you.

Wicked Flea,

You might check and see if your video drivers have a diagnostic with it; most do. If not you can usually find a fairly capable one for free online, or check the manufacturer's website.

I've found in some cases before that even though a expansion card isn't overheating to the touch, a faulty component on the card could be overheating just enough to gum up the works. I've even found this on occasion with motherboards. The diagnotic might pick it up, or at least cause the same problem while running. If it does occur the likelyhood is that your card is starting to fail. Just like a car, the luck of the draw (purchse) can happen at any time to any one.

Check this out and let us know what you find. I'll do checking with my sources and see if there's been any noted problems from the tech end. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice tlwhite01, my system is running a bit hotter than it was. When I said it wasn't all that hot I was not just feeling the exhaust next to my card, but I was also pulling the driver window up. I found out that the nVidia control panel has a temperature monitor, and I'm almost 8°C higher than I was earlier this spring/winter.

Might need to grab an air canister and blow it out.

Got a recommendation for a good diagnostic program? I haven't found a diagnostics option per se, but I have found what I would consider diagnostic information in a few places.

EDIT: Yup, it was heat. After a quick 5 minutes before a lockup I realized I hadn't vacuumed or dusted my case out in too long. I just hope it wasn't too much heat damage. The ceiling fan being on "winter" settings didn't help at all.

The card should still be alright. You'll just have to try it awhile and see if it happens again. Just keep monitoring the temp regularly to assure it's not getting too hot again.

As far as a favorite diagnotic? I usually run one that is with the drivers or get one from online tech support. I've not personally tried any that are available from non-manufaturer sources. There are several highly recommended ones, both free and purchase; I've just not used them as yet.

P.S. I contacted my tech source with nVidia and they haven't had any notice from users with any problems quite like yours. So it probably was all the build up holding heat in. Hope everything goes well. Good luck, and keep on playing!

Well, I just had it happen with an internal temp of 49°C ... and Supreme Commander runs fine at the mid fifties. So, this can't be my card overheating. I noticed that one fan was installed backwards and reversed it, which helped a bit, but the problem persists.

Random colors still dot my screen and the screen stops updating and my LCD hibernates... music chops and stutters... the whole 9 yards now.

I'm going to start checking the drivers and such, but nothing else has done it in the month and a half since I upgraded my system. (I played SupCom for 4 hours once even with the reversed fan and no problem there...)

The only other thing I can see to do is to take it in for a full system diagnostic close to you. I only wish I could live close enough to those I try to help to do it for them, but that's what we get through the internet. I would advise checking several service centers before going and see what their rate is and whether they have free up-front diagnostics or not. I'll continue to check my sources and see if anyone has some other possible ideas and let you know.
Flea, you wouldn't happen to have an older video card laying around, or onboard video you could try, do you? If so, give that a shot.
Neither, unfortunately. I just upgraded to PCI-E and my motherboard doesn't have onboard video. I've even been turning off some of the tougher graphics features off. I'll have to check with the local maintenance guy and see if he has any ideas.

Can't seem to find any diagnostics that came with my drivers though. And searching nVidia's site for "diagnostics" turns up no relevant results.

It seems I'm having the exact same issue. I'm trying out the demo version and it seems like a game I could like, but it just hangs on me every so often. Sometimes I don't even get past the race selection screens. My symptoms are similar to yours, screen corruption. At first I can still move my mouse around, but after a few seconds that hangs as well. Neither ctrl+alt+del or ctlr+esc can resque my windows sessions and the system needs a cold reboot. Nothing in the eventvwr either. Here's my debug.err, I can see we have the same video card:

disabling FSAA seems to have fixed it thus far, at least long enough for me to complete the demo
