question regarding tech progress

i was wondering if someone can tell me on the starting menu, under tech progress rate. it has the options of very slow, slow, normal, etc. What are the differences between these different settings, does it mean research gets done faster for me and the AI opponents. and how does it get affected with various game difficulty levels??

Yes, everyone researches faster/slower as you choose.

Difficulty doesn't affect research speed, though the high-level AIs do get bonuses that will let them research faster regardless of the setting.
