For what is it worth, I purchased and installed the game last night, and am having a similar problem. I am trying to move to the second scenario, and the game crashes with the same message except :

Debug Message: Loading custom map: ./Data/English/Campaigns\Ixith.gc2map (4294967295 x 4294967295)

I noticed that on the campaign option load screens, no option for galaxy size is being shown.

Also, I can get it to crash just by clicking around in the Continue Campaign screen (for the same reason. Debug file below.

The campaign crash is a known issue in 1.5x3. It is fixed in the 1.6 beta patch, which you can find stickied in the beta reports forum.

Akantor, you also need to update your video drivers. You can find newer ones at ati.com or omegadrivers.net (more likely the latter).
